Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Teddy is one busy bear?and he's organized. In the days leading up to Christmas, he's got a sizable list of things to do, from looking in Christmas windows to writing to Santa to hanging his stocking; he's aided in his endeavors by his cat. In this picture book debut, McQuade's teddy bear family is a cuddly threesome rendered in forceful, slightly fuzzy oil portraits. And on each page of text, large bold type announces a fun item on Teddy's agenda, encouraging young readers to recognize their own holiday traditions. Ages 3-7.

From Booklist
Ages 2^-5. Striking oil paintings showing a soft, oatmeal-colored teddy bear getting ready for Christmas make this a perfect vehicle for introducing young children to the rituals of the season. A double-page spread is devoted to each of 12 well-known traditions. Each left-hand page identifies the activity (singing carols, decorating the tree, and so on) in extra-large black type and explains what Teddy and his family do in a couple of short, descriptive sentences. The opposite page is a rich, warm, full-page illustration depicting the bears engaged in the action. Parents are sure to find this a wonderful way to generate excitement for the holiday season, and the oversize pages make the book ideal for group sharing. Lauren Peterson

From Kirkus Reviews
Christmas With Teddy Bear ($12.99; Oct. 1996; 32 pp.; 0-8037-2075- 0): Teddy Bear and his pet cat anticipate and then celebrate a very traditional (but quite secular) Christmas. McQuade doesn't tell a story, as much as string together a series of episodes (``Building a snowman,'' ``Writing to Santa,'' ``Decorating the tree'')--each described in two or three sentences--with which preschoolers will easily identify. The mesh of the canvas shows through the brushstrokes of McQuade's festivity-laden oil paintings, giving a textured effect similar to needlepoint. Starring a hero who is a close relation of Jane Hissey's Old Bear (1986), this is a small, affectionate book. (Picture book. 3-6) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Outstanding content & illustrations5
Jacqueline McQuade did a superb job with this special book for the holidays. The canvas-like pictures of Teddy Bear caught my children's attention instantly. Each page consists of a beautiful illustration. a large-print description of Teddy Bear's holiday activity, and a few short sentences describing in detail what Teddy Bear is doing. I'm going to order the rest of her books right now. This book was a gift given to us for Christmas 1996, and it has been cherished every year.

An adorable book, adaptable to many ages5
I really love this book! The pictures are so adorable---you want to reach right in and cuddle Teddy and his kitty friend. I also love the fact that each page has two levels of text---one is very simple, for example, just saying Singing Carols, and the other has more detail. Each text page also has a little detail from the facing picture page. Many of the pages have a kitty to find, which engages the very young, and the pictures have sweet details without being overwhelming. I am going to look for more by this author/artist!
