Fighting Shirley Chisholm
Determination, perseverance, and hard -working are all words to describe the wonderful woman named Shirley Chisholm. Shirley was a remarkable woman during her lifetime, she was head of the New York Day Care Board, apart of the New York Legislature and a congresswoman, just to name a few. One of her most known accomplishments was that she was the first African American woman to run for presidential candidate nomination. Shirley devoted her life to serving others and their children and being all that should could no matter how hard she had to push for it. This book is recommended for people who enjoy reading biographies that are detailed with facts about their accomplishments rather than their actual family life issues and people who want to learn more about women or African American achievements.
Shirley Chisholm was a person who never held in what she had to say. A time that she did this was when she wanted to be on the Education Board, but she was put on the Agriculture Board she asked about it and questioned why she was put on a board that she knew almost nothing about rather than what she was qualified or. Many of her on-lookers said that she was committing "political suicide" by speaking her mind so freely. Yet, that did not stop her for saying it and she was switched to the Education Board at her will.
` Shirley was the type of person who devoted her life to others. She gave up on having children after two miscarriages; therefore, she decided to give her life to others' children. She pushed to become apart of daycare and teaching, but many places denied her because of her small figure, saying that the children would not take her seriously. When they said that she volunteered there instead of working for pay to show them that she had what it took and when they realized that she had excellent work ethnics she was immediately hired. A few years later, she became the head of eight Daycares in New York.
Shirley Chisholm never gave up no matter what it was. When she found out that she had a tumor in her lower abdomen she didn't want to get it removed at that time because it was in the middle of her campaigning for presidential nomination. Her doctors and husband convinced her to get it removed, but she continued to campaign from being rolled around in her wheelchair, although she was somewhat bed written in order for her to heal properly. During her presidential campaign she also was low on money, therefore she was only able to campaign in states such as Florida and Ohio, where the stakes were competitive and leave the rest up to her committee, but that didn't stop her at all.
People who enjoy reading biographies more focused on the person's accomplishments rather than their family life or who want to know more on women or African American achievements will enjoy this book. This was a good book to describe all of the hardships that Shirley went through to get as far as she got. It also described how she was very smart at an early age and how her knowing Spanish and other different skills also helped her along the way. Throughout her life she achieved most of what she did by speaking her mind and voicing her opinion and if she hadn't have done that she would've gotten know where.
Shirley Chisholm
This book was okay. It didn't really explain a lot of big important details about her life. The author explained too much about little things. I was expecting more so that I could have more information for my book report.
