Gifted Parent Groups: The SENG Model

Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted

Parents of gifted children face many strange and disturbingly unfamiliar issues because their children are different from seemingly "average" children.

But when they talk with other parents who are dealing with similar situations, they can find comfort, reassurance, and alternative ways of handling particular problems.

This book describes how parents, counselors, and teachers can form a guided support group using the well-established SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of Gifted) model in order to better understand and help their gifted children.

In our work in the field of gifted and talented, we have often said that parents are our most favorite group to talk to and to work with. Parents of gifted children are very important, yet they often lack access to information about the characteristics, behaviors, problems, and resources for gifted children, and they have few opportunities to exchange information with other parents of gifted children.

This training manual for 'Gifted Parent Groups: The SENG Model' is designed to assist in training facilitators to establish specific guided discussion groups for parents of talented youngsters. The discussion groups described in this book follow a model developed over many years, and they have proven helpful and important for parents of gifted children. The groups help parents better understand, encourage, and nurture their gifted children. As a result, there is better communication within the family, reduced conflicts, enhanced interpersonal skills, and more positive self-esteem. If facilitators implement the model as this manual describes, the results are predictable and beneficial.

Rating the Model5
As one who has facilitated parent groups, I highly recommend this model to be used in multiple settings. The 2nd edition is well organized, clear in it's meanings, and simple to follow. For anyone interested in forming parents groups, this model provides all the information, methods, cautions, and planning necessary to begin working with parents of gifted children. Since it is written in layman terms, professional degrees are not necessary to profit from the information provided. I highly recommend this book as a reference, even for those already involved in parent groups.
