Product Description

This informative and entertaining book imparts how 30 super financial advisors rose to the top of their profession. A reader will be privy to a behind-the-scenes look at financial wizards like Ace Greenberg of Bear Stearns, Ira Walker of Morgan Stanley, Augie Cenname of Merrill Lynch, and Mark Curtis of Salomon Smith Barney. Their personalities and philosophies may differ—some are flamboyant, others border on being introverted. Some have led charmed lives; others overcame huge obstacles in their climb to the top. But they all have one thing in common: they're the absolute, hands-down, best in the business. They discuss everything from how they are able to build businesses managing billions of dollars in assets to how they invest their clients' money.

From the Inside Flap
Today’s outstanding mutual fund managers--also known as portfolio managers--make investing look easy. But don’t be fooled, this type of investing is anything but easy. So, how do the best mutual fund managers in the business consistently beat both their benchmark indexes and competing funds in their categories? What sets them apart from the vast majority of mutual fund managers in the industry? Most importantly, what lessons can you learn from these exceptional individuals?

In The Winner’s Circle: Wall Street’s Best Mutual Fund Managers, R.J. Shook helps answer these and many other relevant questions, through in-depth interviews with today’s most successful mutual fund managers. Candid profiles detail the backgrounds of these extraordinary portfolio managers, and reveal how they developed their investing strategies, disciplines, and philosophies. You’ll even discover the mistakes and missteps these champions have made along the way--and how they learned from each experience. Through real-world stories and amusing anecdotes shared by these financial professionals, you’ll learn as much about their character, values, and principles as you will about how they defined their niche, and how they rose above other pros in the investing world.

You’ll hear from numerous mutual fund experts who are leaders in their respective categories, including:

  • Large-Cap Mutual Fund Managers
~ Bill Miller of Legg Mason
~ Christopher C. Davis of Davis Advisors
  • Mid-Cap Mutual Fund Managers

~ Joel C. Tillinghast of Fidelity Investments
~ Bill Ricks of AXA Rosenberg
  • International and Foreign Mutual Fund Managers

A superb book5
There are a few influential books in the securities industry that should be required reading for all professionals in the securities business. "Successful Telephone Selling" by Martin Shafiroff was a classic in the 80's and 90's and "The Excellent Investment Advisor" by Nick Murray was a compelling book a decade ago. I would be remiss in not including "The Winner's Circle" as a classic in its own right.

"The Winner's Circle" is a superb book for rookies and veterans alike that re-visits some of the very basics of our industry, but--importantly--finds new life for the financial advisor. You'll be glad you read this book. Your advice and service are more necessary than ever, and this book will guide help you guide your business to new and higher levels.

Extremely interesting and informative--lots of ideas5
This is absolutely one of the most interesting and informative books on our industry I've read in a long time.

One of my biggest complaints about books about our industry is that many authors suggest ideas with little back up or prescriptive methods of application. I have been unable to put this book down. The logic and organization of the book is easy to follow, and the techniques make sense. I find every section has a practical application to my business. I will immediately apply many of these techniques and ideas to my business.
