Customer Reviews
I'm a bit wary....
Based on the "look inside" feature of this website, I'm inclined not to purchase this book. There were multiple grammatical/capitalization/other errors in the pages I viewed...including two in the first sentence. Is this the fault of the book itself or was there an error in transcribing pages of the book onto this website? For such a critical topic as self-publishing, and a book which recommends the importance of professional editing, I'm a bit wary about purchasing this item... If these errors are indeed the fault of the author, then this is the sort of book that gives self-publishers a bad name.
He needs to hire a copyeditor
I give Mr. Shellman credit for following his dream, but his booklet is a prime example of why many people look down on the business of self publishing. Here is an example of his writing taken from the beginning paragraph of Chapter 3. (page 7)
"You want to write your story and sell a whole lot of copies right! Of course you do. Not unless you're one of those types who just want to see their name on a book just to say I wrote a book like It's a big deal."
That text is exactly as it is written in the booklet. Even though the price is only $5.00, you can find all the information online for free. I wish Mr. Shellman luck in the future, but he needs to hire an editor to proofread his work.
The little `how-to' book
THE SECRETS OF SELF PUBLISHING: A Booklet to Guide You by Therone Shellman is concise information for those who are looking to publish their own book for the first time. Each chapter covers needed information such as the basics of forming your own company, writing your story and finding an editor, distribution, marketing and publicity. He not only tells the writer how to do it, he gives explicit information on the various companies who actually do the work. The companies are listed by name and their internet address is also provided. He gives the pros and cons of generally accepted truths regarding self publishing.
The book is short and to the point. It covers each area that will be important to the self publishing author. It is well-written and gives the pertinent information needed for success. I found the information helpful and any author interested in this subject will also. It is a must read for those just starting out.
