Cousins Saoirse and Giselle Marshall never did fit into to their life of high-class society, much to the dismay of their oh-so-proper grandmother. They long to emulate their fathers’ lives on the sea. After both their fathers are lost on voyages, the time has come for Saoirse and Giselle to break free.

recommended reading!5
Saoirse and Giselle Marshall are not typical 17th century English young ladies. They can sail, navigate, and wield a weapon as well as any man, having learned from their fathers, the owners of Marshall Ships. When their fathers pass away and they are left under the supervision of their uncaring and authoritative grandmother, the two cousins escape on a Marshall ship, enlisting the help of their fathers' crew. They embark on an adventure that takes them to the mysterious islands of the Caribbean, where they must engage in piracy to defend themselves FROM piracy. Perhaps most notable about The Captains Marshall are the memorable characters; Giselle and Saoirse (pronounced SEER-sha, for those wondering, as I did initially) are cunning, strong, yet loving and compassionate. The novel excels at conveying the unity among the characters as they live, work, and grow together as a family in their mission for freedom.

Amazing first book in a promising series.4
"The Captains Marshall: A Promise of Freedom" is a quick and easy read that leaves you wondering about the future. While the book can be a little rough around the edges at times, the characters will have you coming back for more.

I look forward to discovering what is in store for enchanting Captains Marshall, as well as seeing how the authors style will grow over the course of this wonderful trilogy.

Good work Catherine. Bring on the sequel!

Great Weekend Read5
For a first novel, Catherine wrote an exceptional story! At first it felt as though her dialogue and story were forced, but once she found her rhythm and voice, the story just "sailed" through to the end (pun intended). She did a wonderful job of developing her characters and background information to keep it interesting, but not too much to where it became boring. I loved the "Captain's Log" entries, it gave deeper insight into the emotions of each of the girls and their relationships with their crew. These characters are strong, yet feminine. I look forward to the sequels. What a wonderful way to spend the weekend!
