Reversing Chronic Pain offers a dynamic framework for joining body and mind to speed the healing of traumatic pain from the body level up. Each chapter presents a body-centered skill set that can be mastered through a broad menu of practice exercises. The resulting interlinked somatic building blocks help readers shift from physical pain to body awareness, and from unstoppable suffering to heartfelt connection and peace.
Building on the AIDS cocktail approach that reflects the fact that chronic pain is complex and no one tactic is likely to solve the problem, renowned expert Maggie Phillips presents a 10-1 pain plan comprised of easy strategies based on somatic experience. Even if the reader’s pain is perceived as a “10” at the onset of the program, with 10 being intolerable, the somatic building blocks help shift the pain one point at a time until it gradually diminishes to “1” or even “zero.” Showing how the common professional interventions—medication, physical therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback—may be more harmful than healing, Reversing Chronic Pain stresses self-treatment throughout, involving sufferers in attaining lives not simply endured but actively enjoyed.

A Wonderful Book
Maggie Phillips's Reversing Chronic Pain takes a tremendous amount of up to date scientific information on pain management and presents a beautiful case for mind-body healing and the reversing of chronic pain. Even as a psychologist who has been doing mind-body work for 25 years, I learned new breath, mindfulness and visualization techniques proven to close the gates of pain. This book presents a comprehensive self-help plan but I found it can be useful as a companion to psychotherapy, hypnotic work and EMDR. I especially like her inclusion of body issues such as energy psychology and movement so often missed in books of this type. The addition of her thoughts on spirituality and love offers reassurance and relief for those who can believe and shines throughout Dr. Phillips' caring book.
"Reversing Chronic Pain" is a Must Read
Psychologist Maggie Phillips new book,"Reversing Chronic Pain," is an absolutely indispensible resource for anyone suffering with chronic pain or anyone working with those who are. There are many things to love about this book, but I will focus on just a few. She manages to clearly and concisely explain the relationships between the mind and the body and between pain and negative emotions without oversimplifying--a major achievement. She also identifies the power of words to add to or alleviate the trauma of pain, as when she discusses the difference between words like "psychosomatic" and "mind-body" or between "self-treatment" and "rest." Perhaps most importantly for those suffering with chronic pain, she introduces an amazing variety of approaches to working with pain--psychological techniques (guided imagery), meditation, body and energy therapies, nutritionals, and medications. Quite simply, this is one of the best self-help books for working with chronic pain that I have every read. BUY THIS BOOK!
Reversing Chronic Pain
I suffer from chronic back pain and was searching for ways to deal with it other than pain medication or surgery. I was fortunate enough to be told by a psychotherapist about Maggie Phillips and her Reversing Chronic Pain. Dr. Phillips has the gift of insight into how the body, mind and spirit work together in pain management. In an easy to understand and `makes sense' kind of way, she has taught me that my body wants to heal and has provided the tools needed to tap into this healing power. The techniques I learned will be useful throughout my life for other chronic pain I may face. Sheila
