Interesting blend of Cherokee legend with historical novel
Although this book is aimed at a young audience, I found it an interesting combination of Cherokee legend and historical fiction. The story centers on a young Cherokee woman who is an orphan but has found a "family" that has adopted her. Set in the 1820's the story shows the contrasts between the Cherokee culture and the white culture that is surrounding them. Many of the characters in the book are "half-breeds" as they describe themselves. The atrocities against the Indians by whites is not a major focus of the book; there is no "good side" or "bad side" to this.
The only difficulty I had was with the large number of characters in the book. Some had Indian names and some had English names but were Indians; I found this to be confusing especially at first.
This is definitely a young adult novel. It is one that I think many young girls would find interesting especially if they are fans of historical fiction.
