Love Across the Divide
Imagine being on vacation and ending up naked in a tree. That's what happens to Emily Bradshaw when she is rescued from a tidal wave by Hayden Caldwell. Both women, vacationing separately on the same island, find themselves unexpectedly in the middle of a natural disaster and somehow fall in love despite the turmoil around them. The biggest problem is they never exchange names or contact information and lose touch quickly after rescue crews arrive.
Months later, Emily is protesting the war effort in front of a military base and is arrested for trespassing. Little does she know it is Hayden's base. The soldier is astonished to find the woman who occupies her thoughts fighting against her very way of life. Things get worse when `don't ask, don't tell' comes to the forefront and throws the women together again. Of course, this time they are seemingly on opposite sides of the proverbial fence and neither knows what the future holds.
Bottom Line - Taking advantage of a current event (i.e., the War in Afghanistan / Iraq), Cannon creates a well-developed tale of intrigue and confusion. How are two women from such different worlds supposed to get through all this strife? That's for the reader to find out. I plan to keep this one in my personal collection for the foreseeable future and look forward to reading it again someday. Do yourself a favor... Give this one a shot.
Disappointed
I have come to really enjoy this writers works; however, I was very disappointed with this one. I could not wait for this book to be over.
Right from the beginning I was captivated. The tsunami hits then Hayden rescues Erin and two young children. The writer takes you on their adventure and obstacles until they finally get help. The first few chapters really kept my attention. At this point I was really enjoying this book.
All of a sudden the story gets boring. Erin and Hayden draw the wrong conclusion about one another and this continues for too long. There is no mention as to what happens with the children as if they weren't even a part of the first few chapters.
The story line actually gets somewhat annoying with Hayden and Erin after a while, but I will say Cannon handled the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" issues very nicely, but it wasn't enough. The book really started to drag in the last few chapters. I guess I wanted and was expecting a little more.
The author does pull it off in the end, but for me it was too late. Definetly not her best work.
Hughly Disappointing
First, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed Cannon's first novel w/ Bold Strokes, "Come and Get Me," which I thought was excellent. This, her fifth book, should be as well written and developed, if not better. Alas, it is a huge disappointment. It's contrived, poorly developed and unbelievable. If you had just survived nearly dying from a massive disaster and you were thirsty, hungry and unbelievably filthy. would you be making love w/ a stranger w/ destruction all around you? Unfortunately, the novel doesn't improve. We know this author can write beautifully but her editors should have never let this be published as is. Don't waste your money. Buy her first book instead.
