Every era has its musical money-spinners, whether it's American hip-hop/soul or big guitar rock. Sometimes it can seem that every other band that arrives on the scene sounds like so many of the others. As each of these ever-more derivative acts notches up hit after hit, more people jump on the bandwagon, trying to reap the rewards before the fashion changes yet again. In such a climate, it's rare to find an artist who is willing to go against the current trends. It's even rarer to find one who can convince a record label to support them. It is a difficult choice to make, between maintaining your beliefs and achieving the kind of success that you have dreamed of. Occasionally though, a musician will appear who makes it through to mainstream success with their principles, and their sound, intact. When they do, it can be a breath of fresh air. One such cool breeze is Lenny Kravitz. The music industry can be hostile to originality. If your music can't be pigeonholed, or sold to a specific audience, you can become disliked. Critics can be two-faced. If you conform to modern trends, you'll be dismissed for simply hopping on the bandwagon. If you choose your own path, they'll call you pretentious. It's very hard to please them. Sometimes an artist will be almost universally hated by critics, whilst remaining popular with the public. Lenny Kravitz fits into this category. As a musician you can take risks, or you can play it safe. By taking chances you could lose everything. But you could also gain the world. Few artists have chosen to strike out on their own from the beginning, risking total obscurity. It's easy to change direction when you're famous, but to fly in the face of fashion from the very start takes real determination. Certain artists have somehow succeeded in changing style over and over again without regard for convention. For people such as David Bowie, this has proved astonishingly successful. But for every Bowie, there is an unknown genius that never made it. History may recognise their talents later, but that is not enough. Such was the challenge that faced a young half-black, half-Jewish guitarist by the name of Lenny Kravitz. It's unlikely he knew how difficult the road ahead would be when he set out. Perhaps that was for the best though. If he had known, he may not have taken up the challenge. As it is, Lenny had his heart set on musical stardom, and he was to become one of the pop world's most charismatic stars. In the beginning though, he was just an optimistic kid with a good voice and a talent for guitar. As it turned out, there would be many twists and turns on the road to stardom.
