Ennis hasn’t been around for a few years, but her books are still among my favorites, especially “Clearwater.” (For an excellent novel dealing with intergenerational romance, Karin Kallmaker’s “Touchwood” is hard to beat.)

Decades ago, I bought this at the corner Rexall Drugstore for fifty cents and read it under the covers with a flashlight after my parents were asleep. What a thrill! I still have the whole Beebo Brinker series. Unforgettable.
