Lesbian Books That Make a Difference
By an Amazon.com customer
Winds of FortuneWinds of Fortune by Radclyffe
Buy new: $12.44 / Used from: $7.49
The fifth and probably the best book of the Provincetown series. The first, Safe Harbor, was an early presentation of the currently popular method of depicting lesbian sex. (Previously, Katherine V. Forrest's "Curious Wine" was the pioneering effort that set the standard.)
Curious Wine: A NovelCurious Wine: A Novel by Katherine V. Forrest
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $2.95
Considered revolutionary in its time (1983), this classic was the first to combine a beautiful modern love story with candid eroticism. Still a thrill to read, and simply unforgettable.
Certain Personal MattersCertain Personal Matters by Vicki Stevenson
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $5.80
Continues the tone set by the author in “Family Values” and the rest of the Family of Choice trilogy, but this one includes a bona fide “whodunit” murder mystery featuring all new characters. A unique slant on romantic suspense, and gripping from start to finish.
Finders KeepersFinders Keepers by Karin Kallmaker
Buy new: $11.92 / Used from: $3.94
Kallmaker is a cut above most authors, and this book is a cut above most of her others. It successfully challenges preconceived notions of physical attractiveness and emotional wholeness.
Desert Of The HeartDesert Of The Heart by Jane Rule
Buy new: $11.07 / Used from: $4.89
The landmark film “Desert Hearts” was the first high quality, widely circulated positive portrayal of lesbian life. It was based on this insightful book, which is actually quite different and much more introspective than the movie.
Hard TimesHard Times by Blayne Cooper
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $14.99
Not easy to read in places, this is no bright-eyed and bushy-tailed fluff piece. Blayne Cooper has written ground breaking stuff almost from the start, and she's outdone herself with this one.
Night CallNight Call by Radclyffe
Buy new: $11.48 / Used from: $7.83
Especially compelling for its positive depiction of strong women, plus a gratifying update on the endearing characters from a previous excellent book (“Fated Love”) that shows how relationships can evolve and mature over time.
Grave SilenceGrave Silence by Rose Beecham
Buy new: $13.56 / Used from: $2.00
This author (aka Fulton and Lennox) often presents entertaining and well written “message novels,” of which this one is at the top of the heap.
ChristabelChristabel by Karin Kallmaker
Buy new: $13.25 / Used from: $3.99
Inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge's unfinished metrical poem of the same name. Coleridge readers still debate whether Geraldine was a lesbian. Who cares, when we have this creative interpretation? Karin Kallmaker is a heavy hitter.
MineMine by Georgia Beers
Buy new: $13.63 / Used from: $5.99
Sensitive portrayal of the broad spectrum of emotions associated with loving.
Dreams and SwordsDreams and Swords by Katherine V. Forrest
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $5.35
This anthology is all good, but the story “O Captain, My Captain” combines science fiction and fantasy in a way not done before or since. Fascinating. (Originally published in 1987. Reprint in 2007.)
BittersweetBittersweet by Nevada Barr
Buy used from: $2.56
Barr's first novel (1999), and her only one featuring lesbian characters, still sets the standard for lesbian stories of the Old West. An incredibly sensitive and well-told love story.
Stone Butch Blues: A NovelStone Butch Blues: A Novel by Leslie Feinberg
Buy new: $10.76 / Used from: $5.50
A "must read" classic story of where we came from. Absolutely the best for understanding the history and struggles of the generation immediately preceding us.
Night VisionNight Vision by Karin Kallmaker
Buy new: $11.92 / Used from: $5.00
Classic top-notch science fiction. I still have my copy of the original, published as Laura Adams by Naiad in 1997, but I bought the new edition to see what she had done with the story. The revised version is even better.
Aftershock (Shaken Series)Aftershock (Shaken Series) by KG MacGregor
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $8.79
Second in the “Shaken” trilogy, this book addresses difficult relationship issues, including compulsive behavior and substance abuse. Outstanding and realistic in its approach.
Blessed TwiceBlessed Twice by Lynn Galli
Buy new: $11.65 / Used from: $7.93
A sensitive story about the complexities of healing and emotional awakening. This is the latest from a talented author who knows how to weave intelligence, deep emotion, and humor into an imaginative plot. All of Galli’s books are good.
Behind the Pine CurtainBehind the Pine Curtain by Gerri Hill
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $5.00
More than an exceptional love story, this is a tale of one woman’s evolution from a teenage outcast to a highly successful and socially responsible adult. It’s one of the best of the new breed of novels that reach beyond romance and address complex social issues.
Fresh TracksFresh Tracks by Georgia Beers
Buy new: $12.44 / Used from: $5.49
An insightful look at a look at a variety of women, what makes them tick, and how they interact with one another. Goes much, much deeper than most books into the hearts and minds of the protagonists.
Romancing the ZoneRomancing the Zone by Kenna White
Buy new: $11.92 / Used from: $3.67
Goes far above and beyond the usual formula. A sensitive treatment of the evolution of a complex relationship between two mature women.
Beautiful JourneyBeautiful Journey by Kenna White
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $6.90
An absorbing story of life in England during WWII, the obstacles faced by lesbians during that era, and the emotional strength needed to survive amid society’s prevailing attitudes.
The Romantic Naiad: Love Stories by Naiad Press AuthorsThe Romantic Naiad: Love Stories by Naiad Press Authors by Katherine V. Forrest
Buy used from: $0.01
A memorable collection that includes “Near to Me,” a story by Catherine Ennis with a unique twist on the theme of intergenerational romance. Ennis hasn’t been around for a few years, but her books are still among my favorites, especially “Clearwater.” (For an excellent novel dealing with intergenerational romance, Karin Kallmaker’s “Touchwood” is hard to beat.)
Annie on My MindAnnie on My Mind by Nancy Garden
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $2.75
First affirming portrayal of the trials and tribulations of coming out as a teenager. Still relevant today and a “must read” for young adults who are just now joining us.
I Am a WomanI Am a Woman by Ann Bannon
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $6.18
Decades ago, I bought this at the corner Rexall Drugstore for fifty cents and read it under the covers with a flashlight after my parents were asleep. What a thrill! I still have the whole Beebo Brinker series. Unforgettable.
