![]() | For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend by Patricia B. McConnell
Buy new: $21.33 / Used from: $4.06 Patricia McConnell is my favorite author, and her second book is no less wonderful than her first. She tackles a BIG topic, exploring emotion in our canine friends, but she is so engrossing and easy to read that you won't notice you are delving into some serious science.

![]() | Reaching the Animal Mind: Clicker Training and What It Teaches Us About All Animals by Karen Pryor
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $13.99 This is not a training guide, but it still teaches all you need to know through entertraining stories told in understandable terms about the wonderful clicking training method. It also explains why clicking works so well, not just with dogs, but with all species. A must read.

![]() | Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior and Evolution by Raymond Coppinger
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $9.40 I was always uncomfortable with the "domesticated wolf" theory, but the Coppingers' theory that dogs evolved from wolves as an adaptation to human settlements makes perfect sense. There is a host of other thought-provoking information in these pages. Well worth more than one read.

![]() | On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas

![]() | Canine Body Language: A Photographic Guide Interpreting the Native Language of the Domestic Dog by Brenda Aloff
Buy new: $26.37 / Used from: $24.00 Excellent! Tons of large photos of dog body language for all moods and situations. Perfect companion to Pat McConnell's "Reading Between the Lines" DVD. (Would have loved a few color plates, though.)
|
![]() | Bones Would Rain from the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships with Dogs by Suzanne Clothier
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $4.16 Skip chapter 1 - it is a somewhat narcissistic mini-bio of the author. The rest of this book is a beautifully-written exploration of the relationship we could (should) have with our dogs. They are not machines to be programmed, but living beings to be understood and appreciated.
