![]() | GRE: Practicing to Take the General Test 10th Edition (Practicing to Take the Gre General Test) by Educational Testing Service
Buy new: $14.28 / Used from: $4.49 Despite being the only official source of GRE questions, this isn't a great book.
It has 6 practice tests, but they're easier than the real thing, and it does not include computer adaptive tests. Also, there's little in the way of answer explanations.
The practice tests are worth taking. But don't forget to download ETS's powerprep software and take the two CATs as well.

![]() | Barron's GRE: Graduate Record Examination by Sharon Weiner Green
Buy new: $23.09 / Used from: $3.99 I'm generally not a big fan of the Barron's test prep series, but this is a good one--probably the best GRE book out there, in fact.
Excellent vocab words, good practice tests, decent CD-ROM. Highly recommended.

![]() | Cracking the GRE with DVD, 2009 Edition (Graduate School Test Preparation) by Princeton Review
Buy used from: $12.50 Some of the advice is extremely obvious, but this GRE book is a good start for those who haven't taken a standardized test in a long time and need to start from the very beginning and focus on overall strategy.
In general, the verbal sections are stronger than the math sections. And the practice DVD is pretty good--it does a relatively accurate job of predicting your score on the actual test.

![]() | Kaplan GRE Exam 2009 Premier Program (w/ CD-ROM) (Kaplan Gre Exam Premier Live) by Kaplan
Buy used from: $14.99 This is a good resource, if only for the sheer amount of material it contains.
As usual, Kaplan focuses more on content and varied types of questions than it does on consistent technique. But it's got lots of practice questions and 3 CATs on the CD-ROM.
Good for perfectionists who want to be prepared for every possible type of question.

![]() | Word Smart for the GRE, 2nd Edition (Smart Guides) by Princeton Review
Buy new: $9.88 / Used from: $3.99 Vocabulary is very important for the GRE, so it makes sense to buy this book and plan a long-term strategy for vocab building (5-10 words a night).
A quick disclaimer: most of these words are very advanced, and for every 100 words you learn, maybe one will actually appear on the GRE. Better to start with the "Hit Parade" from "Cracking the GRE", then work your way out to the words in this book.
