Somewhat the opposite of Jurafsky and Martin. This book gets down in the details of specific solutions but doesn't really show you the big picture or the theory.

Best book available on intro Phonetics. Not necessarily for those with a general interest in Linguistics and languages. What I found to be especially useful are the sections of exercises at the end of each chapter to test what you've learned. The exercises are very well designed; however, the one drawback is that the book contains no answer key.

A very good book on speech coding, especially the focus on CELP coders. Many kinds of CELP coders are introduced in detail. If you are beginner on speech coding, this book is for you.

Introduces all the basics of signal processing and vocal tract modeling needed and provides good descriptions of algorithms for statistical speech recognition such as dynamic programmation, Hidden Markov Models, Viterbi Algorithm. An older book (1993).

Begins with a historical intro to speech synthesis, speech recognition, and speaker classification. Next is a discussion of the multitude of formulas and algorithms in speech recognition. Hidden Markov Models & neural nets as applied to speech are clearly explained. The latter part of the book presents the authors' research in identifying individual speakers.

This is very much a signals and systems type book, except that all of the signals and systems described pertain to audio and its perception. The quantitative emphasis in this book is underscored by the exercises at the end of each chapter.

Final chapter is on basic theory of audio amplifier design. Modeling mechanical systems with electrical ones is covered as part of electroacoustics.
