![]() | Nobody's Fool by Richard Russo
Buy new: $14.73 / Used from: $8.75 Rich characters, masterfully told story. Nobody does it like Russo. One of my top three favorite books. Any book written by Richard Russo is a treat. Warning: if you read Nobody's Fool first, his other books have a hard time measuring up. Empire Falls may be a better starting point for the Russo experience, then Nobody's Fool followed by Straight Man.

![]() | The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $2.50 Such elegant, concise writing used to deliver a heart-wrenching, funny, sad, memorable story. I wish I had written it, glad I didn't live it. A true gem I've given as a gift over and over (8 copies so far) with complete confidence it will be an appreciated memory. Everyone I've given it to cant put it down, nor could I.

![]() | A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
Buy new: $17.79 / Used from: $9.09 Quirky, funny, brilliant and told in a way that allows you to fall into the story. The story is as good as the writing. How many times have you been able to say that about any book? Very memorable, entertaining from the first page to the last.

![]() | Straight Man: A Novel by Richard Russo
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.82 A book I shouldn't have liked because of the subject matter (about academia), but I loved it. One of the few books that made me smile when I read it and caused me to miss deadlines until I lived those last pages. I hated for it to end.

![]() | Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Classic, seductive story telling at its best. Fiction you believe is true, feel it, smell it, live it. Writing that transports you to another place and time, effortlessly.
|
![]() | A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $2.95 An acquired taste in writing and storytelling. Brilliant work, but not for everyone. If you like flawed, off-beat, narcissistic characters, it's a must read. I flat out loved it but check out the reviews before you purchase to see if it's your cup of tea.
|
![]() | Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $5.11 The best book Moore has written to date (Fool comes in a close second) and one of my all-time favorite novels. Moore has never disappointed me with anything he's written, although Lamb has set the bar pretty high for perfection.
|
![]() | Holidays on Ice: Stories by David Sedaris
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.84 A little book with some great stories. One of the few books that have made me laugh out loud. I'm smiling now just thinking about it. Who would think Sedaris could write fiction? Anything written by Sedaris will make you smile and feel good about yourself simply by comparison.
|
![]() | The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $2.23 Surprisingly good at first glance, gets better and better till you are hopelessly hooked. Don't let the title turn you off. A superbly crafted novel from a gifted writer.
|
![]() | Dry: A Memoir by Augusten Burroughs
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.52 One of Burrough's best. Even his worst book (that would be Sellavision) is still better than half the stuff I've read. Magical Thinking is second on my list of favorite Burrough's books. If you want to explore his work, start with Running With Scissors and work your way up to Dry.
|
![]() | The Tender Bar: A Memoir by J.R. Moehringer
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $4.00 Simply good reading and writing. One of the few books I've given a five star rating to. Hated, just hated for for the journey to end.
|
![]() | Traveler by Ron McLarty
Buy used from: $2.80 The main plot is a mystery, but I would classify it as enjoyable, light reading (don't have to think too much or work too hard), a story that seduces you and the mystery becomes secondary. The Ha-Ha by Dave King falls into the same category as the Traveler.
|
![]() | The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $0.01 I was given Lovely Bones by mistake--long story. I never read mysteries anymore if I can avoid them, but what a lucky mistake. Very good writing and a compelling, dark story told well. Did I mention great writing?
|
![]() | I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell by Tucker Max
Buy used from: $8.96 A book with absolutely no socially redeeming value written poorly by a guy with even less socially redeeming value, if that's possible. Always entertaining and never a dull moment, chock full of cringes. Not recommend for feminists, or if you offend easily, or anyone with a conscience. It's an experience.
|
![]() | Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.47 A reading addict loaned this book to me and I was shocked by the quality of the story telling. Normally I'm not drawn to historical fiction, but this book is an exception. It's not a truly great book, but there's good reason it's a classic.
|
![]() | Water for Elephants: A Novel by Sara Gruen
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.02 Unusual writing and an equally unusual story. To me, there was nothing smooth about the writing or the story. I loved the bumpy experience but have a publisher friend who loathed it. A worthwhile read.
|
![]() | The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $1.50 Warm, disturbing, historical, rich characters and clean, clear writing. Simply a good story well told. Her best effort by a mile. As always, don't judge a book by the movie.
|
![]() | The Honk and Holler Opening Soon by Billie Letts
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.62 I'm throwing this one in because it's a little known novel that has so many good things going for it. I read it a few years ago and I can still recall the characters and storyline. Letts also wrote Where the Heart Is (baby born in Walmart). Well-told story, good characters and very good writing. Not often do you find all three in one book.
|
![]() | The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel (P.S.) by Barbara Kingsolver
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $0.30 I understand this is supposed to be a chick book, but I can't help liking it. Really good writing, characters that endear and frustrate, and a story that transports you to a different world. If you are a devout Baptist, I doubt you will like it. If you like stories of women persevering and appreciate stories told from different points of view, you will love it.
|
![]() | Hoot by Carl Hiaasen
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 FOR KIDS: I read this one by accident. I soon discovered it was a kid's book, but I couldn't put the darn thing down. Really good story, effortless writing that pulls you along like a grappling hook, and G-Rated to boot. Perfect for a preteen or the child in all of us.
