![]() | Encyclopaedia of Chess Middlegames / Combinations by Chess Informant
You should be able to get though the first half of this book in a few months. Once you are an Expert start the second half. I carried this book with me everywhere and worked problems in my head every chance I had, some people called it my bible. I read it at lunch, on the bus, during breaks, before going to bed, in bedÂ… you get the idea.

![]() | Sharpen Your Tactics by Anatoly Lein
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $11.35 An OK substitute for my out of print choice above. If you are able to find the "Encyclopedia of Chess Middlegames" then this is the next study everywhere combo book. The first half will take a few days but is a good review of basic mating positions. The 3 star problems are good for A players, the 4 star problems for experts.
|
![]() | Chess Tactics for Advanced Players by Yuri Averbakh
Buy used from: $45.00 Openings, middle games, end games all have one thing in common. Combinations! Averakh argues that combinations are all just a form of double attack. This book is also a good introduction into the textbook style of russian chess books. You should also try to get Chess Combinations By A. Koblents (Tal's trainer) ISBN 0 900928 94 8. It is very rare but it is a short read with some good ideas.
|
![]() | Chess Tactics (Batsford Chess Book) by A.A. Kotov
Buy used from: $12.94 From the author of "Think Like A Grandmaster". This is a fine collection of tactical chess positions (not 3 movers) that make you think though different options while calculating your next move. Think strategically about the position while your opponent is on the clock. Think tactics when you are on the clock.
|
![]() | The Art of Checkmate by Georges Renaud
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $3.95 OK... This is a very simple book and a class A player will eat it in about a week. Just do it. All of the basic checkmate positions are demonstrated and one or two of them will be new to you. One or two new ideas is enough to make a book worth reading now that you are a class A player or Expert. This book is also good for giving chess lessons to beginners.
|
![]() | The Best Move by Vlastimil Hort
Buy used from: $999.99 Very very rare, sorry. Each page is a chess lesson from a strong master and will take most players 30 minutes to an hour just thinking though ideas. Do not cheat this book. Work the positions in your head until you have strong ideas about the position. This book does not always have a +- or a # at the end of the line so it is a nice change up from the combo books listed above.
|
![]() | Practical Chess Exercises: 600 Lessons from Tactics to Strategy by Ray Cheng
Buy new: $14.00 / Used from: $9.13 If you want to be a Chess Master you must develop your ability to see deeply into chess positions and to correctly calculate variations. Most class players seem to just drop pieces and make simple mistakes because they have never really systematically worked at improving their ability to calculate.
|
![]() | Imagination in Chess: How to Think Creatively and Avoid Foolish Mistakes by Paata Gaprindashvili
Buy new: $16.52 / Used from: $6.70 Same idea as "The Best Move" but not as strong. It is important to see and work though complicated positions that do not have a forced checkmate at the end of the line. You should look at the problems and try to see the solutions in your head not on a board.
|
![]() | Art of Attack in Chess by Vladimir Vukovic
Buy new: $24.25 / Used from: $11.00 Important classic book on how to reach positions rich in tactics. You can not use your new tactical powers if you can not build up positions that lend themselves to crushing ideas.
|
![]() | The Art of Sacrifice in Chess by Rudolf Spielmann
Buy new: $9.31 / Used from: $4.49 There is a difference between a combination and a sacrifice. A combination can be calculated to a clear win of material or checkmate. A sacrifice will give you many things like tempos and open lines of attack, but true sacrifices are never clear.
|
![]() | Masters of the Chessboard by Richard Reti
Buy new: $25.95 / Used from: $31.13 A very strong history of chess theory and the great players up to the 1920s. Lots of good chess ideas and also explanations of many different styles of play. Read though the book and pick one of the players that has a style that you like. Then look up a bunch of their games on the net. It is important to find your own chess style.
|
![]() | Modern Ideas in Chess by Richard Reti
Buy used from: $4.58 Introduction to the hypermodern school of chess. Classic book that is a must read. I think it is the best book to read before taking on Nimzowitsch.
|
![]() | My System (Chess Classics) by Aron Nimzowitsch
Buy new: $23.96 / Used from: $17.50 This is a chess college text book... you can read it in parts and come back to it over and over. It is very useful to look up basic positions after you have played a game to see how you should have played. Read it more than once!
|
![]() | The Blockade by Aron Nimzowitsch
Buy used from: $6.75 The root idea of Nimzowitch's chess theory. Short book but with an important idea that you must understand.
|
![]() | Aron Nimzowitsch: A Reappraisal by Raymond Keene
Buy used from: $16.95 I can not believe this book is out of print(?). One of Keene's best efforts and an a major contribution to understanding Nimzowitch the person. I think it is important to study and understand one or two players in great detail. Chess is an art too, and if you want to become a Master you need to study other artistic Masters of the past.
|
![]() | Carlsbad International Chess Tournament 1929 (Dover Books on Chess) by Aron Nimzovich
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $3.41 Keene's book "Aron Nimzowitsch: A Reappraisal" gives you the man, "My System" and "Blockade" explain Nimzowitsch's theories, and this tournament book shows you Nimzowitsch's games with his own thoughts. Unlike other chess players, Nimzowitch is very open about his ideas.
|
![]() | Pawn Power in Chess by Hans Kmoch
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $3.43 Want to be a master? Time to start studying! Some of these ideas are old but if you don't know them you will find yourself getting rolled by better players.
|
![]() | Pawn Structure Chess by Andrew Soltis
Buy used from: $29.00 You do not need to memorize all that much to be a Master, but you do need to become familiar with many chess patterns and ideas. Things like pawn structure, week squares, mating themes often point the way to winning combinations or won end games. To develop your pattern recognition it helps to see and work through positions with the same pawn structures and the same tactical ideas many times.
|
![]() | Pawns in action (The Chess player) by A. P Sokolskii
Buy used from: $229.43 Very rare and very small book. Mostly just a collection of games that have good ideas about pawn breaks and pivot points. Don't bother until you are high Expert. I think this book put me over the top. I made Master right after studying this book.
|
![]() | Lasker's Manual of Chess by Emanuel Lasker
Buy new: $21.86 / Used from: $15.88 A very underestimated book from one of the top players of all time. Lasker goes through much of the basic chess patterns, how to study chess and some philosophy on chess and life. His exercise on visualization of the chessboard should be done every night before you go to sleep. Skip the philosophy if you want but the rest is gold.
|
![]() | Art of Chess Analysis by Jan Timman
Buy new: $15.56 / Used from: $8.80 Very solid book with great positional analysis. Timman is a great player and author. With the advent of Fritz, many of todays books are filled with variation and tactics but lack any detail about planning and positional considerations.
|
![]() | Zurich International Chess Tournament, 1953 by David Bronstein
Buy new: $11.21 / Used from: $4.95 Classic book that everyone reads. I had trouble with it because I like open games... this book has master level games with classic positions and plans. Unlike class players, Masters do not drop material or make basic mistakes very often. You win against other Masters because you know more than they do about the position on the board or see something very deep.
|
![]() | My 60 Memorable Games by Bobby Fischer
Buy used from: $7.50 Fischer! The best chess book of all time. Great writing with honest analysis and even good opening ideas. You can copy Fischer's opening systems from this book and almost be set until high expert. The end game parts of this book are great study tools. Work from a board and think before looking at the next move. Compare your ideas to what Fischer recommends.
|
![]() | Bobby Fischer: His Approach (Cadogan Chess Books) by Elie Agur
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $6.61 A surprisingly good book. Lots of positions with comments from Fischers opponents and others. Just like Nimzowitch, I think it is important to study a few players in detail. I still think Fischer was the best to ever play the game.
|
![]() | Life & Games of Mikhail Tal by Mikhail Tal
Buy new: $18.45 / Used from: $11.95 Filled with ideas and stories.
|
![]() | Tal-Botvinnik, 1960 by Mikhail Tal
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $9.90 One of the best match books of all time. Set up a board and play though the games as if it was your move. Only after you have decided on your move should you look at what was played.
|
![]() | Fire On Board: Shirov's Best Games by Alexei Shirov
Buy used from: $9.48 A great book for Expert and better players. This book also has modern ideas about how to play the opening.
|
![]() | Morphy's Games of Chess by Philip Sergeant
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.12 The Mozart of chess. Going over his games brings me great joy. If you are not enjoying chess why are you studying it? ChessBase has a very nice DVD on Morphy too, but I like the book better. Why? Because I go over the games in my head. Remember Lasker's visualization exercises? By the time you are a high Expert you should be able to play one game at a time without the board.
|
![]() | Games of Mikhail Chigorin (Master Game Collections) by Efim Bogolyubov
Buy used from: $39.95 Another great master. He played complicated games and often preferred knights over bishops. This is another book that you can try doing in your head... but unlike the clean games of Morphy, Chigorin's games will give your brain a major workout! I like this book because it includes comments from several generations of other chess Master who have also studied these games.
|
![]() | Chess Endings: Essential Knowledge by Iuri Averbakh
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.50 Required endgame knowledge. You may already know the ideas in this book, but like "The Art of Checkmate" above, make really sure you fully understand everything in this book. Even if you only learn one or two new ideas it is worth the investment.
|
![]() | Comprehensive Chess Endings: Bishop Endings : Knight Endings (Pergamon Russian Chess Series) by Yuri Averbakh
Buy used from: $48.22 Volume #1, but work on this book after volume 4 and 5.
Use these textbooks like the combo books above. Start at page one and work your way though. Try to find the ideas before you look up the answers. Once you understand the ideas and the patterns you will become a monster in the endgame. Most Masters grind down lower rated players in the endgame and these books will give you that power too.
|
![]() | Comprehensive Chess Endings: Bishop Against Knight Endings Rook Against Minor Piece Endings: Volume 2 (Pergamon Russian Chess Series) by Yuri Averbakh
Buy used from: $50.00 Volume #2
Work on this book last... but you should be looking at these books after your games to find the best ideas. This is better than fritz because of the excellent explanations of plans and patterns.
|
![]() | Comprehensive Chess Endings: Queen and Pawn Endings, Queen Against Rook Endings, Queen Against Minor Piece Endings (Pergamon Russian Chess Series)
Buy used from: $135.30 Volume #3
Work on this book after Vol #1. Bishop and knight endings.
|
![]() | Comprehensive Chess Endings: Pawn Endings (Russian Chess Series) by Yuri Averbakh
Buy used from: $79.98 Volume #4
I don't know why this book is 4th... but you should work though it first!
|
![]() | Comprehensive Chess Endings Volume 5 Rook Endings (Russian Chess Series) by Yuri Averbakh
Volume #5
Rook endings are very common. Work though this book second.
|
![]() | Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual by Mark Dvoretsky
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $16.20 Best of the modern books on the endgame. The ChessBase DVD is excellent too. I give this book only because the Averbakh books are out of print. There is nothing in this book that Averbakh does not cover in much more detail.
|
![]() | Comprehensive Chess Openings: Open Games by Jakob Estrin
Buy used from: $17.07 Volume #1
Basic solid russian school of chess openings. Don't fall into the trap of memorizing openings or wasting money on opening theory. Wait until you are a strong Master for that stuff. Find a player you like, copy their style and openings and start winning games by crushing the class players with attacking play and combos. Use these books to survive the first few opening moves.
|
![]() | Comprehensive Chess Openings: Closed Games by Y. Estrin
Buy used from: $21.00 Volume #2
Umm... yawn... but you have to be able to look this stuff up and this is a great text book.
If you are going to buy from Amazon please contact the seller first. Some sell all three together, some don't. Some are hard cover and some are soft cover. I have seen used book stores sell the soft cover boxed set between $35 to $50.
|
![]() | Comprehensive Chess Openings (Pergamon-Russian Chess Series) by Ia Estrin
Buy used from: $40.91 Simi-Open Games
Volume #3
Again, use like a text book. Look up your games and fix your mistakes. Look up your favorite player and then see why they play their openings the way they do. Do not memorize openings! It is a huge waist of time.
|
![]() | The Gambit by M. Yudovich
Buy used from: $5.00 Estrin wrote the "Comprehensive Chess Openings" books with solid and safe play in mind. Yudovich gives many gambit lines to add to the above books. This book is small but written in the same spirit as the above opening books. If you want to get better you need to play gambits from time to time.
