![]() | Sharing Nature With Children (20th Anniversary Edition, Revised and Expanded) by Joseph Bharat Cornell
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.75 Helping children become inspired by nature is part of what builds critical examining and natural appreciation for life. A great book with lots of ideas!

![]() | Spare the Child: The Religious Roots of Punishment and the Psychological Impact of Physical Abuse by Philip J. Greven
Buy new: $16.15 / Used from: $2.41 This book explores the religious roots of American corporal punishment in raising children. It's interesting, and likely an important read if you were raised in a religious / violent household and are trying to raise your children differently.
![]() | For Your Own Good: Hidden Cruelty in Child-Rearing and the Roots of Violence by Alice Miller
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.95 Alice Miller is something of a controversial psychoanalyst, but this book is extremely interesting in terms of looking at causes for violent behavior of parents / children.
![]() | The Psychology of Parental Control: How Well-meant Parenting Backfires by Wendy S. Grolnick
Buy new: $29.88 / Used from: $26.46 This book examines many of the unspoken premises in child-rearing, namely, that parental control is necessary / unavoidable. Research has demonstrated (in this book and others) that levels of control exacted on children growing up have various and at times, profound, effects on development. A great read for anyone considering discipline not only as a "strategy" but also as a concept.
![]() | Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and Punishments to Love and Reason by Alfie Kohn
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $5.75 By far the strongest suggestion on the list! If you get nothing else, get this book!!! Alfie Kohn is a provocative researcher who uses ample research and references to support his stance on unconditional love and respect demonstrated in parenting. I'll also say that reading his "Punished by Rewards" book was a great PREquel, as it tends to cover his theoretical view a bit better.
![]() | Punished By Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A's, Praise and Other Bribes by Alfie Kohn
Buy used from: $0.01 This book is a fantastic prequel to "Unconditional Parenting". It covers the extensive research on how punishments and rewards damage children's intrinsic motivation and self-esteem. The book is written to parents, teachers and supervisors, so some parts are more relevant than others. This book was an unexpected challenge to many of the commonsensical views of "bribe / threat" parenting.
![]() | Beyond Discipline: From Compliance to Community by Alfie Kohn
Buy new: $17.24 / Used from: $10.54 This book is geared towards educational professionals (teachers) but I found it wholly useful in examining parenting as well. It unpacks a lot of the assumptions about how children learn and how adults teach, and it was helpful in hashing out my thoughts of how to teach as a parent.
![]() | No Contest: The Case Against Competition by Alfie Kohn
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.36 Like all his other books, Alfie Kohn is well-researched and backs up his views with sound logic. This book is obviously more relevant for an older child as opposed to an infant, but fascinating read in any case.

![]() | Raising Children Who Think for Themselves by Elisa Medhus
Buy new: $17.91 / Used from: $7.25 Just what it sounds like. Great book.

![]() | Parenting From the Inside Out by Daniel Siegel
Buy new: $9.72 / Used from: $8.63 Haven't gotten through it all yet, so I'd recommend reading the reviews to make up your own mind about this book. It's been strongly recommended for parents who are looking seriously at how to be connected, respectful and rational with their children.
![]() | Playful Parenting by Lawrence J. Cohen
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.99 A staple for anyone becoming a parent. It goes along with a rational / respectful / non-punitive view of discipline.
![]() | Raising Freethinkers: A Practical Guide for Parenting Beyond Belief by Dale McGowan
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $9.87 Coming in 2009! I've already pre-ordered my copy! It's a guide to go along with Dale McGowan's other fantastic book, "Parenting Beyond Belief".
![]() | Parenting Beyond Belief: On Raising Ethical, Caring Kids Without Religion
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $7.40 This was a life-changing read. In part cause I found McGowan's blog, which is a great resource for secular parents, but also cause its the first book of its kind. Often parent books have judeo-Christian undertones via approaches to morality, learning, discipline, and obedience. This book is for parents who dont want to indoctrinate, but want to foster kids who think critically about all things.
![]() | Coloring Outside the Lines by Roger Schank
Buy used from: $0.01 This book seems to be controversial and rated variously depending on who's doing the rating! I haven't finished reading it yet and will refrain from commenting, but for any parent looking to expose themselves to against the grain ideas, its a great start.
![]() | The Brighter Side Of Human Nature: Altruism And Empathy In Everyday Life by Alfie Kohn
Buy new: $11.11 / Used from: $0.97 Another of Kohn's work. This book explores & critiques the Judeo-Christian idea that humanity is inherently evil/self-serving and instead makes a case for the unique capacity of humans to empathize. I found this a useful starting point for parenting. Whether we like it or not our view of human nature effects how we interpret the motivations of others, including our children.
![]() | Freeing Your Child from Anxiety: Powerful, Practical Solutions to Overcome Your Child's Fears, Worries, and Phobias by Tamar E. Chansky
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $6.98 This book is useful for exploring childhood fear/anxiety. As a child, I became fearful at night and would wake my parents frequently to be put back to bed. Though its normal for all children have fears, this book was useful in examining kids' perspectives of anxiety/fear, and how parents can respond. Good at developing sensitivity/understanding to respond to childrens' emotions.
![]() | Hearing Is Believing: How Words Can Make or Break Our Kids by Elisa Medhus
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $6.55 I haven't read this book yet. The reviews looked particularly interesting, and I assume its one of those books that challenges some of the conventional ways we talk to children. IE, "You're a good boy!" Often parents use statements like this to reinforce good BEHAVIOR in children, but the wording implies goodness as a personal quality as opposed to making behavioral choices.
![]() | Parent Effectiveness Training: The Proven Program for Raising Responsible Children by Thomas Gordon
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $3.38 Though the title of this book is quite cheesy, Thomas Gordon was one of the researchers at the forefront of non-coercive parenting. He is often referenced by Kohn. A good read, strongly recommended!
![]() | Teaching Children Self-Discipline at Home and at School by Dr. Thomas Gordon
Buy used from: $0.01 Another one of Thomas Gordan's work, highly recommended!!!!
![]() | Connection Parenting: Parenting Through Connection Instead of Coercion, Through Love Instead of Fear, 2nd Edition by Pam Leo
Buy new: $13.50 / Used from: $11.31 I have not read this book yet, but it is often recommended by others who've read Kohn's work, and "Playful Parenting" by Cohen. Read the reviews for more info, but I was convinced enough to order it!
![]() | Between Parent and Child: The Bestselling Classic That Revolutionized Parent-Child Communication by Dr. Haim G. Ginott
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $5.45 This book has been recommended to me by nearly ever non-coercive / progressive parent I know! I haven't yet received it from Amazon, but I would recommend it! Read the reviews for more info!
![]() | Summerhill:A Radical Approach to Child Rearing by A.S.Neill
Buy used from: $29.00 Again, this book was personally recommended to me by nearly every progressive family I know! It can be hard to find, but is apparently timeless!
![]() | Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves: Transforming parent-child relationships from reaction and struggle to freedom, power and joy by Naomi Aldort
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $11.37 I wrote a somewhat mixed review of this book on its rating page that I would recommend anyone read before buying it. Its a great book in terms of being anti-coercive / respecting children and demonstrating unconditional love, but I didn't find it to be particularly well researched. I got some good things out of it, but it requires reading with a critical eye.
![]() | Raising Lifelong Learners: A Parent's Guide by Lucy Calkins
Buy new: $15.25 / Used from: $0.11 Great book full of ideas and anecdotes on how to encourage wonder and imagination in children to inspire their curiosity/ learning. Didn't agree with everything, but it is by far one of the most interesting and creative books on the subject of instilling a love of learning. Great buy because it can be used with preschoolers up through high school.
![]() | New Traditions: Redefining Celebrations for Today's Family by Susan A. Lieberman
