You could have passed it off as a fluke. Remission was an awesome album, helping revitalize metal and bringing the band much deserved notice. Leviathan was a gigantic leap, perhaps the most ambitious metal album in years. But could it keep going? People were concerned–-side glances were given, hand wringing began as Mastodon moved to a major. And for what? Turns out for nothing. Blood Mountain is flat-out amazing. If anything, it is another leap forward, both experimentaly and melodically. From the opening blast of "The Wolf is Loose", to the gorgeous "Sleeping Giant", on to the propulsive "Circle of Cysquatch." The King Crimson acid scratch of "Bladecatcher" gives way to the beautiful guitars on "This Mortal Soil" and the album closer. Lyrically and vocally, there are stand-outs--especially "Colony of Birchmen" with rich harmonies and a guest appearance from QOTSA's Josh Homme. Other guests on the record include Scott Kelly of Neurosis and Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta. This marks yet another grand progressions for a band that is quickly building up one of the best catalogs in metal. --Robert Arambel

Get a new singer!!!!
All this group needs is a real singer. Musicianship is excellent! Singer sucks. Anyone can yell! Get with it Mastadon,...you guys have real talent!
One of the best metal albums in a long time.
I'll try to keep this brief. Mastodon is simply a perfect metal band. They're complex, they're original, they've got plenty of melody and groove to complement the skull-crushing heaviness (and without taking away from it at all), and like many other of the best metal bands, they don't fit comfortably into this or that category. Their style is simply their own.
As much as I don't want to single out any one musician, drummer Brann Dailor is certainly worth a mention. His sophisticated and explosive style definitely stands out, blending jazz and metal techniques perfectly. It's worth noting that Mike Portnoy, Max Weinberg, and Dave Grohl are all big fans of Dailor's drumming. When you get respect from those guys, you know you're doing something right.
But like I said, I don't want to single anyone out, because the whole band is great, especially vocalist Brent Hinds, who combines razor-sharp screaming with more subdued singing (like on the "ballad" of the album, "Sleeping Giant"). He does a fantastic job of keeping up with the eclecticism of the music. And if that weren't enough, you also get sweet guest appearances by Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age, Cedric from the Mars Volta, and Scott Kelly from Neurosis, who add even more great variety to the mix. Apparently this is also a concept album (about the psychological effects of getting lost in the wilderness), but as compelling as that sounds, you'd be hard-pressed to follow it, as the music pretty much speaks for itself.
All in all, this is just a killer album. The musicianship may be a bit daunting to some, if you aren't really used to progressive metal, but I think the song-writing is very well-balanced. I read a review from a critic who claimed the songs "went on for too long", which is just absurd, because most of the songs don't even top five minutes. I think anyone looking for an awesome metal experience won't be disappointed here. In my opinion, this is the best metal album since Death's "The Sound of Perseverence". Definitely check it out, especially if you're tired of the same old thing.
All hail Mastodon!
This is Mastodon`s third album (fourth if you count Lifesblood or the Call Of The Mastodon) and it`s a great one.. Take one part trash, one part hardcore, one part King Crimson and one part old school metal and what do you get? Yeah, that`s right.. One tripped out metal album.. The guitars, bass, drums and vocal are all great, Matt Bayles did a great job producing this monumental album..
The extra dvd is great, it feature all the podcasters from the making of the album ++ alot of extra material.. it also feature some great photos and a music video.. buy it... you`ll be sorry if you don`t...
