This entire series is fantastic. By setting it in a culture (Catholics in a Mormon town at the turn of the centur) it awakened my love of older times and curious things like "inventions" (the watercloset) is featured in one of the early books.

Every child goes through an age when she/he loves series books. I read so many series books, but my favorites were Cherry Ames. I never did become a nurse, but I loved her WWII nurse stories, her visiting nurse story and being her trials as a student nurse. It satisfied my childish love of history as well as my enjoyment of series books.

Oh, this book had every element that I loved. It was based on a true event (island of Krakatoa volcano) had the elements of creating your own world, just the way you liked, everything was splendid. And they were castaways. A marvelous book.
