Still here .... for now.
Concordia Publishing House would like this venerable work to disappear and substitute for it the new Lutheran Service Book. But think it over.
Items the Lutheran Service Book has done -
1). Commemorations for individuals like Staupitz, Luther's superior in
the Augustinians, who in the end remained Roman Catholic.
2). Re-introduction of the Eucharistic Prayer (eliminated from the Mass
by the Reformers) - which obscures the centrality of the Words of Institution in Communion.
3). Feminization of the hymns. "Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning ... " becomes "stars of the morning," etc., etc. Do we really want to join the feminist bandwagon - a wound in society which as led, in generation, to a rise in the divorce rate from 5% of new marriages to 50%?
TLH might have its deficiencies, but they are few and pale in comparison to LSB's. Beware.
Excellent Hymnal!
This is one of the best hymnals out there, containing 660 great hymns. Also included are many Psalms, worship services (including prayer services for the home), a church calendar, glossary of liturgical terms, many prayers for all occasions, and fantastic hymn indexes. This book has a place in every sacred music library, and is also perfect for family devotions. The content is timeless, and will always have great relevance. This book is a real treasure!
