Delicious! But stock up the liquor cabinet...
It's hard to plan meals if you're not a family of four. When I want to try something new I'm always stuck eating it for the rest of the week, whether it's good or not. Since it's just the two of us I made the decision to invest in a cookbook designed for two. What better way to start than with a "Complete Idiot's Guide"?
What a nice surprise to find out that even idiots can eat well. This book makes me feel like Burt Wolf, "going around the world, looking for good things to eat". The recipes are a real adventure, through many different cuisines, including Asian, French, American Comfort, California, Spanish, Tex-Mex, Cajun, Indian and Moroccan. Most are complex enough to be interesting, but simple enough to be easy and fun to prepare. The ingredients are things you can find in most well-stocked grocery stores. The author, Ellen Brown, shares many tips for shopping and food preparation in smaller amounts.
There are some lovely pasta sauce recipes that I've tried, and there's always enough to have for dinner, and divide the rest for two more, to put into the freezer. How lovely to be hungry, boil some pasta, and defrost a tasty sauce.
Be prepared to do a lot of chopping. And stock up your liquor cabinet. Seems like every recipe I've tried has booze in it. Not that I mind, but if you don't have red and white wine on hand, and a small bottle of sherry, you'll find yourself needing a trip to the liquor store. And give serious thought to getting out the food processor. However, if you're a teetotaller, fret not. There's something in this book for you, too.
So put away the Hamburger Helper and the Healthy Choice meals, and partake of something worth cooking and eating. And if you don't like something, well, the dog will eat good for a day.
