The Citizen Watch Brand

The company was established in 1924. The founding fathers selected the name Citizen so it would be "Close to the Hearts of People Everywhere" and soon after adopted the company’s formal name, Citizen Watch Company.

During the last seventy-five years Citizen has expanded its business throughout the world and has achieved recognition as the global brand. The past twenty-five year period has coincided with the company’s dramatic rise to its current position as the world’s largest watchmaker, a distinction Citizen has held every year since 1986.

Beyond sheer size, Citizen is also recognized as a worldwide leader in advanced technology. From the world’s slimmest LCD watch to the first voice recognition watch and the world’s first professional dive watch with an electronic depth sensor, Citizen’s record of "world’s firsts" is unmatched.

More recently, Citizen has staked out a new position as the leader in Ecologically Friendly timekeeping with its Eco-Drives watches that are light powered. With models ranging from dress models to sports models to professional dive watches, Citizen Eco-Drive runs continuously in any kind of natural or artificial light for a lifetime of use. Fueled by light, it never needs a battery.

Eco-Drive Frequently Asked Questions (See the full Citizen Eco-Drive FAQ here)

How can you tell if the Eco-Drive watch is getting enough light?
In normal use, the watch displays the time and the sweep-second hand moves in one second intervals. A very important feature of Eco-Drive is the Low Charge Warning Mode which as a result of low battery voltage, causes the second hand to jump two seconds at a time (while still keeping correct time).

How long will an Eco-Drive watch run after it is fully charged?
If your watch is put away where no light is available to it while in a fully charged state, depending on the model, it will run for from 45 days to 5 years.

How can the Eco-Drive watch be recharged?
Besides sunlight, it can be safely charged by exposing it to a fluorescent desk lamp, with the dial (face) up and within about 8 inches or an incandescent lamp (regular light bulb) no closer than 20 inches. Never use a halogen lamp since the heat generated by it can cause damage to your watch. The most efficient and the quickest is in direct bright sunlight (not windowsill) and never on the dashboard of a car.

Incredible quality and functionality5
I recently purchased the Citizen Modena II and am very impressed. The watch functions flawlessly. The features such as the analog stop watch, dual time zones, and alarm all work perfectly and are especially impressive to watch.
For example when you select the alternate time zone of your choosing, the hands proceed to rotate rapidly forward or reverse until they've reached the correct time. It may sound silly, but I think it's amazing how you can select all the different functions, and when you switch back to normal time (by rotating the stem) it automatically goes back to the precise current time. The perpetual calender is great as well. I'm glad I'll never have to reset the date on my watch again. Yesterday was February 29th (leap year) and the watch knew it. The finish and build quality are incredible as well, I believe this may be the last watch I'll ever have to buy. P.S. Don't fret if you notice the second hand stop or suddenly spin around rapidly on occasion, it is simply a function of the power save mode, wherin within minutes of being in the dark the second hand will stop, and as soon as it senses light again it will catch up to the current time (seconds). The minute and hour hands continue to move regardless of light level.

Excellent all-around watch a joy to own.5
It can be tricky shopping for watches online and trying to gauge what a watch will actually look and feel like once you get it on your wrist. So my review will point out certain details and compare the real thing with Amazon's information in their entry for this watch.

Strictly from an aesthetic perspective, the Modena II is a beautiful watch. The photo accompanying Amazon's entry doesn't begin to capture the good looks of this timepiece, which is a pity - someone might pass it up just because they're not seeing a crisply-detailed image of the watch face's busy but clean chronograph layout and the dark blue background color.

Size and weight: the band is solid, but not as wide as the 26mm stated in the entry. Why? The watch has some heft to it as well, and surely weighs more than the listed weight. I know these are minor quibbles, but is it too much to ask for more precise measurements?

Chronograph functions - a bit clumsy with the first attempts to tweak various settings, but once you get accustomed to the way the watch works it's a non-issue. You'll need some patience also. The instruction manual's not exclusively written for this model, so you will need to read the settings pages thoroughly before trying to adjust them on the watch.

I strongly recommend buying the 'heavy duty' watch pin removing instrument; I opted for this and it performed flawlessly, and in no time I had resized my watch to a very comfortable fit - not tight, yet the watch face stays put and doesn't slip on my wrist. Perfect.

I highly recommend this watch. Some other Citizen Eco-Drive models seem to receive more attention from Amazon customers, but this one shouldn't be overlooked.

Fantastic watch!5
I browsed many different watches on Amazon before deciding on this one. I was swayed by the eco-drive feature and the perpetual calendar. I received the watch on time and was extremely pleased with it from the start! It is a beautiful watch and it has some great features. Straight from the box, the watch took a good dose of sunlight to get it running, but since that time, has been working perfectly. Setting the calendar was a little tricky, but the watch came with a CD-ROM that explained everything and showed me step by step how to set it. With that, it was a breeze to set all the functions. I also ordered the heavy duty watch band tool and it made adjusting the watch band extremely easy. I have owned the watch for a little over a month and I have had absolutely no problems with it. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a watch. A great watch at a great price!!!
