The Citizen Watch Brand

The company was established in 1924. The founding fathers selected the name Citizen so it would be "Close to the Hearts of People Everywhere" and soon after adopted the company’s formal name, Citizen Watch Company.

During the last seventy-five years Citizen has expanded its business throughout the world and has achieved recognition as the global brand. The past twenty-five year period has coincided with the company’s dramatic rise to its current position as the world’s largest watchmaker, a distinction Citizen has held every year since 1986.

Beyond sheer size, Citizen is also recognized as a worldwide leader in advanced technology. From the world’s slimmest LCD watch to the first voice recognition watch and the world’s first professional dive watch with an electronic depth sensor, Citizen’s record of "world’s firsts" is unmatched.

More recently, Citizen has staked out a new position as the leader in Ecologically Friendly timekeeping with its Eco-Drives watches that are light powered. With models ranging from dress models to sports models to professional dive watches, Citizen Eco-Drive runs continuously in any kind of natural or artificial light for a lifetime of use. Fueled by light, it never needs a battery.

Eco-Drive Frequently Asked Questions (See the full Citizen Eco-Drive FAQ here)

How can you tell if the Eco-Drive watch is getting enough light?
In normal use, the watch displays the time and the sweep-second hand moves in one second intervals. A very important feature of Eco-Drive is the Low Charge Warning Mode which as a result of low battery voltage, causes the second hand to jump two seconds at a time (while still keeping correct time).

How long will an Eco-Drive watch run after it is fully charged?
If your watch is put away where no light is available to it while in a fully charged state, depending on the model, it will run for from 45 days to 5 years.

How can the Eco-Drive watch be recharged?
Besides sunlight, it can be safely charged by exposing it to a fluorescent desk lamp, with the dial (face) up and within about 8 inches or an incandescent lamp (regular light bulb) no closer than 20 inches. Never use a halogen lamp since the heat generated by it can cause damage to your watch. The most efficient and the quickest is in direct bright sunlight (not windowsill) and never on the dashboard of a car.

Fantastic Eco-Drive watch for the price4
This watch was a Christmas gift for myself. I had very specific needs--I was looking for an affordable Eco-Drive, silver toned with white dial, a metal band, and one that was very thin and light, and this fit the bill. After wearing it daily for four months, here are my observations.

Pros:
-so extremely light, flexible and comfortable it's almost like not wearing a watch, yet very durable--not flimsy at all
-very thin (like the thinnest Swatch watches), so it does not catch on clothes
-a great value
-beautiful, simple, classic design
-no batteries necessary, so it saves you money and is good for the environment
-secure, worry-free clasp
-I have very sensitive skin, and have had no allergy reaction to the stainless steel band, as I have to leather and plastic bands.
-I have very thin wrists, and unlike other watches, this one was easily adjusted to my wrist diameter. (I like to wear mine fairly snug, so it doesn't move around.)

Cons:
-no second hand, which I miss sometimes when trying to time something
-no date
-not the best water resistance (contrary to the description, it is splash resistant only)

I didn't wear a watch for years because I found them bulky, irritating, etc. This one is different. I also have gotten many compliments about the look of this watch.

My only regret is that I expect to be wearing this watch for years, and sometimes think I should have just sprung for a more expensive model like the Citizen Eco-Drive Women's Corso Stainless Steel Watch #EW3120-59A, which address my few Cons.

nice light-weight watch5
After 9yrs of daily wear, my beloved old EcoDrive stopped keeping good time because it wasn't recharging properly. Having it serviced was going to cost as much as a new watch. That model was out of production, but I wanted to replace it with something almost identical: the smallest, simplest, plainest, steel/silver-tone, metal bracelet EcoDrive I could find. It needed to have all twelve tick-marks for the hours (not just one at noon), but I didn't want the added clutter of a date window, minute tick-marks, or a second-hand. This model fit the bill.

When it arrived, the first thing I noticed was that the bracelet felt "cheaper" than the bracelet on my old watch. Each link is made of five metal pieces in two rows (3+2), but they are fused instead of being connected with a pin the way they were on my old watch, so the bracelet is not as flexible. On consideration, I realized that the biggest difference is that this new bracelet is much lighter than the old one... and that the changes were probably made as a deliberate improvement. My old watch scratched easily, so I will be careful with this one, especially the crystal, because I'm guessing it won't charge as efficiently if it's all scuffed up.

Overall, I'm delighted with this purchase. It's a beautiful little watch, just what I wanted. And I love that it's an EcoDrive. Somehow a watch is never quite the same once you've had to replace the battery; after the back has been opened it's never quite as water resistant afterwards, and its days are numbered. But with an EcoDrive, there's no battery to replace, so I'm looking forward to (hopefully) another 9yrs!

Wonderful5
I love this watch; I've had it for several months now and I wear it every day. Very pretty and simple, the clasp is totally hassle-free, it's not bulky at all, keeps time perfectly, and matches all my other jewelry. Out of the box it was far too big for my thin wrists, but when I went to have it re-sized it was such an easy and quick adjustment that the store only charged me half-price. The fact that I'll never have to get a new battery is a bonus.
