The Citizen Watch Brand
The company was established in 1924. The founding fathers selected the name Citizen so it would be "Close to the Hearts of People Everywhere" and soon after adopted the company’s formal name, Citizen Watch Company.
During the last seventy-five years Citizen has expanded its business throughout the world and has achieved recognition as the global brand. The past twenty-five year period has coincided with the company’s dramatic rise to its current position as the world’s largest watchmaker, a distinction Citizen has held every year since 1986.
Beyond sheer size, Citizen is also recognized as a worldwide leader in advanced technology. From the world’s slimmest LCD watch to the first voice recognition watch and the world’s first professional dive watch with an electronic depth sensor, Citizen’s record of "world’s firsts" is unmatched.
More recently, Citizen has staked out a new position as the leader in Ecologically Friendly timekeeping with its Eco-Drives watches that are light powered. With models ranging from dress models to sports models to professional dive watches, Citizen Eco-Drive runs continuously in any kind of natural or artificial light for a lifetime of use. Fueled by light, it never needs a battery.
Eco-Drive Frequently Asked Questions (See the full Citizen Eco-Drive FAQ here)
How can you tell if the Eco-Drive watch is getting enough light?
In normal use, the watch displays the time and the sweep-second hand moves in one second intervals. A very important feature of Eco-Drive is the Low Charge Warning Mode which as a result of low battery voltage, causes the second hand to jump two seconds at a time (while still keeping correct time).
How long will an Eco-Drive watch run after it is fully charged?
If your watch is put away where no light is available to it while in a fully charged state, depending on the model, it will run for from 45 days to 5 years.
How can the Eco-Drive watch be recharged?
Besides sunlight, it can be safely charged by exposing it to a fluorescent desk lamp, with the dial (face) up and within about 8 inches or an incandescent lamp (regular light bulb) no closer than 20 inches. Never use a halogen lamp since the heat generated by it can cause damage to your watch. The most efficient and the quickest is in direct bright sunlight (not windowsill) and never on the dashboard of a car.

Nice Watch
Purchased this watch only by images that I have seen. Upon opening the box, I was amazed at how much better the watch looks in person. The face is a little larger than expected but it still looks great on my wrist. The Eco-drive feature is great and actually the main reason I purchased the watch. The band is a very durable black leather - wasn't sure if I would like the white stitch on the black leather but it looks nice. My only complaint is for a chronograph watch, you can only measure seconds, I have other chronographs that can measure 10ths of seconds. Overall, this is a handsome watch and a great value. I have already received compliments on the watch and have only worn it for a little over a week.
Excellent Time Piece
I purchased this watch for myself as a birthday gift. I received it on 12/16/2008 and am writing this review on 12/19 so I have been wearing the watch for only three days. First off, the watch is packaged nicely; nothing too out of the ordinary but a nice package.
The first thing I noticed when I removed the watch and had my first good look at it was the pictures on this site make the watch look like it has a very white face. In person, it is much less in your face and more subtle. It almost looks more grayish then white. Honestly, this was a pleasant surprise to me. It looks 100x's better on my wrist than it does on this site.
The leather band is very stiff at first, but this is to be expected. As with all leather bands, I'm sure some time to let it get used to me is all it will need. The clip is nice and does not pinch my skin in any way. The watch is very comfortable on my wrist. Also note that the watch does indeed have white stitching on the band, one white line on each outer portion of the band. A lovely addition.
As stated before, the chronograph is a nice feature, but don't expect to time races down to the second. It's nice if you need to place something in the oven for 10 minutes or something like that.
All in all I could not be happier with this watch. The Eco-Drive works flawlessly and the watch worked right out of the box. I have had no problems with it at all thus far. I would 100% recommend this watch to a friend.
Very nice watch
This is my third Citizen watch and I am very happy with all of them. Citizen watches are very high quality for the price range and I have yet to be disappointed.
The Amazon picture of this watch doesn't do it justice, it looks much more stunning in person. The face is darker than it appears in the picture, its a dark silver/grey color which works very well with the silver border and black band. I also really like the blue accents of the chronograph hand and the 24 on the 24 hour dial.
Face size is just about the same as every others men's watch out there. Large but not exaggerated like some newer watches tend to be. Like all Citizen watches it does have some heft due to the Eco-Drive. Not particularly noticeable unless you really want a light watch.
The band is made of a thick, stiff leather that feels very durable. Feels to be a higher quality band than on a Swiss Army watch I have in a similar price range. The white threading on the band looks good, it compliments the face and band quite nicely.
Extremely easy to set just like any other basic watch. The 24 dial makes setting the date slightly easier.
If a chronograph is important to you this isn't really the watch to get. If I wanted exact measurements I would get a digital watch. The chronograph is handy, but obviously don't expect the precision you would get with a digital. I do not particularly like the the buttons to control it. They are kind of soft in that you don't get in any sort of click to know that its depressed. Not a big deal, and I got this watch for it's looks, not the stop watch.
Eco-Drive is great. I am someone who usually wears a watch for 2 years and then lets it sit for the next 2 years until I get around to getting the battery replaced. With the Eco-Drive I sometimes keep my watches charged by putting them under a fluorescent bulb at night if I am not wearing them frequently. Not that it's really needed. I had one Citizen watch lose it's charge after sitting in the dark for 2 weeks. When I went to wear it and saw the time had stopped I just went outside and let the sunlight hit it for 30 seconds and it started right back up. Usually with my watches they get enough charge from daily use to keep their charge for days to weeks. Besides that one time, losing power has never been a problem for me.
I highly recommend this watch.
