The Battle of Natural Bridge, Florida, was one of the final Confederate victories of the Civil War. Fought on the banks of the St. Marks River, the engagement assured Tallahassee's status as the only Southern capital east of the Mississippi not conquered by Union troops. For its size, the Battle of Natural Bridge was a fierce and complex encounter. Involving Federal attacks by land and sea and determined resistance by Confederate forces that included cadets from what is now Florida State University, the engagement was unique and of significant importance.

Great little Battle history!
I found this description of the battle of Natural Bridge to be very interesting. I've read one opinion that it was a distraction to pull reinforcements away from the Mobile campaign but after reading this book I now know it had nothing to do with it. The abundant sources of witnesses from both sides is very good in this, as most accounts are in Quarterly type articles or the occassional story of a participant. One of the units mentioned in the book was served in by my GGGrandfather. It was one of the mistakes that I've seen in most past articles. Capt Henry Abel's Company B (Milton Light Artillery [FL])was no where near the battle at that time having been sent to Savannah, GA in 1864 and then in the Carolinas campaign until the surrender. The book on the "Battle of Marianna" by the author was great so I tried this one. He has one more that I'll try next which is in the Trans-Mississippi Dept of the War between the States. If your interested in Florida's war betwen the states history I recommend his books on Marianna and Natural Bridge.

This book is for our archaeology library. In scanning the book I find useful information to be used when working in the area.
