DOGGIE CUTS: A Complete Step-By-Step Video Guide to Grooming Your Dog at Home, A Review by Susan Scanlan, DOG Magazine, November, 1996
Nearly all of us have had a sudden need to transform a shaggy, smelly or dirty dog into a more attractive and huggable companion. Whether your dog was playing in a muddy flower bed, rolled in something disgusting, or is unexpectedly meeting your future in-laws, the question remains the same: how to change your beast into a beauty? If you don't have time for an appointment with a groomer, your budget's tight this month, or your canine isn't "groomer friendly," then it's probably time to put on some old clothes and get to work yourself!

But there's more to dog grooming than the occasional quick suds and rinse with a hose. As animal advocate Kevin M. DuVall has observed, grooming keeps you tuned in to your dog's overall health. He further notes that such care-giving has another boon: strengthening the loving bond between you and your pet.

It was DuVall's own desire to groom his Yorkshire Terrier, Coco, that inspired the video, DOGGIE CUTS. Seeking instructions to safely clip Coco, DuVall went out to rent a video on the subject. He was amazed to learn no such video existed! Considering the widespread need for such knowledge, he felt compelled to produce a video himself.

As Executive Producer, DuVall brought together a team of experts, and spared no expense in producing a top quality product. Both educational and entertaining, the video covers a lot of ground in ninety minutes. Safety is an ever-present consideration. While some cautions are repeated, the gentle tone expresses true concern for the well-being of each dog.

Celebrity host and animal lover Dick Van Patten provides an introduction to the video, and reappears throughout to reinforce key points.

Veterinarian Cindi Bossart, owner of The Animal Hospital of Fort Lauderdale, and groomer/handler Georgia Warren, both of Florida, cover bathing procedures, trimming nails, brushing teeth, checking ears, and more in an upbeat and informative segment. While most dog owners know these things need to be done, many feel uncertain as to how best accomplish them. Watching the experts at work will boost the viewer's confidence in handling grooming details that are important for all dogs.

Master Dog Groomer Patrick Murdock, who owns and operates Dog Charm Pet Grooming, Coral Gables, Florida, ably leads viewers through the extensive clipping portion of DOGGIE CUTS. Murdock demonstrates four different basic cuts, of a variety which should include a style appropriate for all purebred or mixed breed dogs with coats that require clipping. Throughout his presentation, Murdock clearly explains the use of various grooming tools, including Wahl clippers and attachments.

Murdock begins the easy-to-follow demonstration with a "Sanitary Clip" of DuVall's Yorkie, Coco. Next, a Miniature Schnauzer receives a "Terrier Clip." A "Sporting Clip" is given to a Cocker Spaniel. The last model is a young Poodle, who receives a "Puppy Clip." Murdock explains the reasons, both practical [affecting the dog's health and comfort] as well as cosmetic, for the various cuts. While concise in his delivery about the basic cut, the professional in Murdock can't resist the occasional extra snip or two that perfects the job.

Dedicated breeders, promoting the best of care for their puppies, may want to recommend this tape to new dog owners. Rescue groups and shelters should consider making this video part of their reference collection.

At first, one might not consider recommending this video to professional groomers, but they, too, may wish to have copies on hand for their clients. While DOGGIE CUTS makes home grooming possible for most dog owners, professional groomers will appreciate the good attitude and health of their doggie clients who receive regular grooming at home.

The "Doggie Cuts" Video Shows You How to Groom Your Dog, by Kathleen Kernicky, Staff Writer for the Sun-Sentinel, February 25, 1997
When Coco, his 11-pound Yorkshire terrier, came home from the groomer with a cut and bloody paw, Kevin DuVall saw red.

"The groomer had sliced open his toe [with a clipper] and not told me," says DuVall, 36, a Fort Lauderdale entrepreneur who has dabbled in acting and TV commercials. "He was bleeding all over the car. He needed to have stitches."

DuVall decided to do something about it. The result is DOGGIE CUTS, a 90-minute video and step-by-step guide for pet grooming that demonstrates, among other things, how to clean a dog's teeth, trim his nails and give him a stylish haircut at home.

DOGGIE CUTS features a celebrity host, actor Dick Van Patten [a Labrador owner]. But its primary participants are South Florida animal professionals.

Dr. Cindi Bossart, veterinarian and owner of The Animal Hospital of Fort Lauderdale, provides tips on veterinary care, such as how to check a dog's eyes, ears and skin.

Bossart and dog handler Georgia Warren talk about health and nutrition, how to prepare the dog for bathing and the proper shampoos to use.

Patrick Murdock, owner of Dog Charm Pet Grooming in Coral Gables, demonstrates different cuts and styles on four dogs, including a Yorkshire terrier [Coco], a miniature schnauzer, a cocker spaniel and a poodle.

Bossart, who also is Coco's vet, is perhaps best known for treating the puppies buried alive by their owner in his Oakland Park back yard two years ago. Their mother, Sheba, became a hero when she dug through the dirt and pulled the pups to safety.

Bossart says the video is educational for all dog owners, especially those who bathe or groom their dogs.

"The video is excellent overall for the care of your dog . . . and how to groom your dog and make his appearance the way it should be with a minimum amount of stress on the animal," Bossart says.

Pet owners often don't realize that bathing a dog improperly can have health risks, Bossart says. Getting soapy water in the dog's ear or eyes can result in ear infections or corneal abrasions.

DOGGIE CUTS was taped in Fort Lauderdale and at Van Patten's home in California.

DuVall hopes it will spare other dogs from Coco's experience. "Coco is the reason I did the video," says DuVall, who used to pay a groomer every six weeks. "It's really a bonding experience for the dog and you. It's the most satisfying feeling when you cut your own dog's hair and people come up to you and say, 'He's got a great haircut. Where did you have it done?'"

Great but has it's faults4
Like most people who'll buy this DVD, I wanted to save some money and save my dog the stress of the groomer visit. This DVD was a great component in my learning how to groom at home.

The DVD shows 4 basic doggie cuts, and they vary enough that you can apply one or a combination of techniques to your dog. There were many hints about dog bathing/health care that were very helpful. Based on talking to my dog's previous groomer and watching the very brief video that came with the clippers I bought, I had been able to groom my dog for over a year. But after watching the DVD I was able to finally give my dog an almost professional looking haircut.

The DVD does have some faults. The main one is that they're all small dogs. My 50 pound terrier/cattle dog mix is not easy to pick up and turn in the position you want. I definitely needed my husband to help out during the trim. I wish Patrick Murdock would've trimmed a big dog, and maybe shown the proper techniques to using a harness.

A technical drawback is that the DVD is just one track. You think they would make a separate track for each dog style but that isn't the case. This makes it extremely hard to get to a certain section for review. You just have to fast forward and hope you don't miss it.

Still, it's a great DVD to own for the at-home groomer.

Thrilled about this one, very satisfied5
I was very excited and hopeful about buying this video. After viewing it for myself, I was thrilled to find out that it covered everything I needed to know about cutting the hair on my adopted long-haired mixed breed dog. I was especially happy to finally learn how to trim the long hair on Sammy's body, particularly the straight cut across the bottom. All the basic cuts were shown for a complete haircut including trimming around the eyes, ears, feet, chin, the belly area, tail, the rear end, etc. (even a top knot was shown for a poodle). Everything is demonstrated to give any kind of dog a full haircut from front to back, top to bottom. Four breeds of dogs were used (Yorkie, Schnauzer, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle), so you learn and apply any or all of the many techniques to your own particular breed of dog, resulting in the style that you desire.

I thought that I would need assistance keeping Sammy still while I cut his hair, but I didn't. (The groomer explained exactly how to calm him down before and during the entire grooming session, and it really worked.) The video also showed me how to safely trim Sammy's toenails so I don't have to pay someone to do that anymore. It even shows you how to brush your dog's teeth, proper bathing, etc.

Each of the segments on the DVD were very easy to find, and rewinding and fast forwarding to review any part that you want is very easy--you only have to know how to use the proper buttons on your DVD remote--it was very simple.

Out of all the many grooming videos I have purchased, this is the only one that I would recommend if you want to give your dog a safe and complete haircut. It's a terrific DVD for teaching at-home grooming.

Excellent tutorial and fun to watch5
This was purchased on a lark when I wanted to groom my Maltese to save money on expensive grooming salons. The step by step instructions are easy to follow in a conversational manner which is easy to listen to and the animals are the perfect subjects. I learned the basics inside of one intensive afternoon of practice and though I'm not ready to show my pooch at Westminster, I certainly will save a small fortune in grooming fees each year thanks to this tape.
