It's still one of the sweetest kisses onscreen, up there with Bergman and Grant, Bogey and Bacall: the moment when pampered purebred Lady and streetwise mongrel Tramp, sharing a moonlit plate of spaghetti in an alley behind an Italian café, unknowingly slurp the same strand, and suddenly find their mouths meeting in surprise and tenderness. Ah, puppy love. Lady and the Tramp is a delight of animation and surprisingly deep character development, given that the stars are all dogs. Lady, an adorable Cocker Spaniel, feels neglected when her owners become distracted by the pending birth of a baby. But the last straw is clueless Aunt Sarah's appearance with her conniving Siamese cats (among Disney's most creatively evil villains), who wreak havoc on Lady's blissful home life. Soon Lady is off on an adventure in the streets, where the savvy Tramp takes her under his paw. The lessons of friendship and loyalty, of integrity--not to mention trusting in the kindness of strangers--ring true to delighted children and adults alike. And unlike many Disney films, there's no real violence, only challenges that smart dogs (including a tough-talking vamp named Peg, voiced sublimely by Peggy Lee, who also wrote the songs), banding together, can tackle. The animation is terrific; the scene where we first meet Tramp shows him rinsing off under a pipe, and his subsequent shaking-off of the water follows the detailed rippling up and down his back that any dog lover will recognize. And is there any song more romantic than "Bella Notte"? Bellissima! --A.T. Hurley

On the DVD
The second disc is jam-packed with extras, including deleted scenes (one surreal, extended one in which the dogs imagine that they ruled the world, keeping humans as pets) and lots of behind-the-scenes dish. The story, an original one for Disney, had been kicking around the studio for nearly 20 years before the film was made, and there are great interviews with animators and surviving relatives on the evolution of Lady and of the plot. One priceless episode deconstructs how the evil Siamese cats were created (they were originally named Nip and Tuck), and features a glamorous Peggy Lee, who also cowrote this and other songs in the film, explaining how she dueted with herself playing both cats. Little ones will enjoy the games, including a DVD-ROM in which they can "adopt" a puppy and teach him tricks. --A.T. Hurley

Favorite cartoon5
"Lady and the Tramp" is my favorite Disney movie. Who can forget the romantic scene as our hero and heroin share spagetti and they meet nearly nose to nose on a single strand while serenaded ...'a beautiful night'. This film showcases great characterization, voices, sound and imagery. It's comical and thrilling with the feel good happy ending. I bought this for myself.

Thank you4
Thanks so much for sending this so fast - I didn't realize the cover was in French (?) No big deal, maybe I misread something, but the movie plays great and we are satisfied. Thanks!

A Great Family Romance Gets The Platinum Treatment5
Walt Disney's "Lady And The Tramp" was never one of my personal favorite films as a child. I'm all grown up now, and it has become a very enjoyable treat for me and my entire family. For those unfamiliar with the story, here's a brief explanation: Cocker Spaniel Lady has a perfect life until a baby shows up. She begins to feel neglected and when her owners take a little vacation and leave her and the baby with Aunt Sarah, she winds up on the mean streets alone....until Tramp shows up. He defends her, has a romantic dinner with her and eventually finds his way into her heart. It's all executed with Disney's classic perfection and littered with wonderful songs like "Bella Notte" and "We Are Siamese."

What really makes this film worth five stars is the treatment it receives in this platinum edition. The digital restoration looks and sounds great. The extras are some of the best I've ever seen, especially the "Backstage Disney" features that give animation fans a wonderful look at the development of the film.

If you're a fan of animation, this DVD is a must. The special features alone are worth the purchase price. Fans of light romance, family films and dogs will also love this classic Disney tale. Highly recommended.
