The Grammy-nominated, twenty-something, pop-classical phenomenon's fourth studio album is an expertly accomplished entry to the holiday marketplace. Noël tackles the familiar sounds of holiday music with a charmingly eclectic array of guest vocalists and a wide range of material. The songs range from the sacred to the secular, while Groban--buoyed in spots by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra--soars in his duets with Brian McKnight, Faith Hill, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There's even a song with a gospel choir directed by Kirk Franklin. Produced yet again by crossover maestro David Foster, the arrangements never overwhelm the songs. Groban's smooth and supple vocals can be hard to categorize--seeing how his range is somewhere in-between a high baritone and a low tenor--but he always finds and emphasizes the emotional core of these songs. And whether they have origins in pop or classical music seems not to matter. The addition of messages from troops stationed in Iraq on top of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is undeniably heart-wrenching, while the album's highlight is its most spare song, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," which finds Groban alone at his piano, sounding very much like some kind of angel. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews
I am "Thankful" for this truly beautiful Christmas CD
I am a huge fan of Josh Groban, and the track "Thankful" is a truly outstanding one. I am so glad that this gem (co-written by David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager, and Richard Page) features on Josh's "Noel" Christmas Album. It is destined to become another holiday standard, along with Michael Buble's take on yet another David Foster/Linda Thompson favourite "Grown-Up Christmas List". I am so thankful that artists like these guys breathe so much life into beautiful music written by the experts. However, by including another David Foster/Carole Bayer Sager penned song "The Prayer" as a new duet (where I imagine Josh teaming with the amazing voice of Heather Headley) would take this CD to heights unheard of. But credit must go to all who collaborated on this album, just as it is, for allowing me to even entertain the notion. Anways, this album is a special holiday favourite (along with Maureen McGovern's "Christmas With Maureen McGovern").
Too dramatic but laking substance.
I have Josh Groban first 2 CDs and I like them a lot. My anticipation ia a bit high when I saw "Noel" released by him. This turns ou to be a complete disappointment to me. I don't like any of the arrangements and his singing doesn't show any distinct from these traditional carols sung by other singers. I tossed it to my sister and she didn't paticular thrilled as before she listen to it.
I recommend you try Micael Buble or Amy Grant's Christmas Christmas song because they carry a lot of emotions and make one's heart warm!
This is the CD Josh tried to make it dramatic but it fell short.
