I'm Not There (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)I'm Not There (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.48
Exiting the cinema after watching "I'm Not There" left me with a feeling of sheer exhiliration. Not only is this my pick for the best film of 2007, it is my pick for the best film of all time. Todd Haynes showed his tremendous talent to the world with "Far from Heaven" and with this film, he shows that he ranks among the world's great contemporary filmmakers.
No Country for Old MenNo Country for Old Men
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $4.90
What all the critics say is true. This Coen brothers feature really is as good as "Fargo," and it will haunt your memory for days after seeing it.
There Will Be Blood (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)There Will Be Blood (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $8.55
I have always been a big fan of Paul Thomas Anderson (he is my favorite writer/director), and I would be lying if I said that "There Will Be Blood" is anything short of a masterpiece, or out of the league of his best work prior.
Michael Clayton (Widescreen Edition)Michael Clayton (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $3.37
Though films about corporation corruption (etc.) typically make me roll my eyes, this is one of the few that I find to be altogether good. It is easily the best of its kind since "Wall Street."
Juno (Single-Disc Edition)Juno (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.67
This charming little ditty from Jason Reitman (Thank You for Smoking) is an absolute delight, and it is one of the few family-appropriate films that is actually digestible.
The Kite RunnerThe Kite Runner
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $5.10
This film got kind of lost in the jumble of Oscar contenders at the end of the year, but it is certainly one you should check out if you missed it before. Also, I would recommend reading the Khaled Hosseini novel of the same title on which the film was based.
Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet StreetSweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $3.92
I don't believe that this film was given the credit it truly deserved. The first time I saw it, the ending chilled me to the bone, which I find extremely rare for a musical. Of course, we are dealing with Sondheim material here, so it should be obvious that you won't be wasting your time if you watch it.
Zodiac (Widescreen Edition)Zodiac (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $0.78
By the time Oscar season rolled around, most of America had forgotten about this excellent April release. It is a chilling story that sucks you in for two and a half hours and spits you out at the end feeling as though you've been as wrapped up in the murders as the main characters.
American Gangster (2-Disc Unrated Extended Edition)American Gangster (2-Disc Unrated Extended Edition)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $3.43
There's not a lot to be said about "American Gangster" that you probably already haven't heard, so see it. It's good.
The SavagesThe Savages
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $4.94
This film never quite made it around to theatres in my hometown, so I had to wait until DVD to see it, but it was well worth the wait. If you like subtle humor, I'm sure you'll enjoy "The Savages," because it's full of it.
