From the Manufacturer
The Heath Zenith Wireless Command, SL-6053-WH Motion Switch with Dual Brite kit makes any light motion activated. Installation is simple; just replace your existing switch. The wireless motion sensor can be mounted where needed to detect movement without wiring up to 100 ft away from the wall switch receiver. The wireless motion sensor features 240 degree motion detection angle up to 100 feet away with selectable sensitivity and light timer of 1 or 5 minutes. The motion sensor requires two AAA batteries, not included. When motion is detected, the light controlled by the wall switch will turn on. The wall switch receiver features control of lights up to 300 watts incandescent light and dimming of five light levels on the switch. When using the Dual-Brite feature the light with turn on at a low level at dusk and set on for the preset amount of time 3 or 6 hours. When motion is detected, the light will turn on to full bright level for 1 or 5 minutes and return to the low level after motion stops. The Heath Zenith Wireless Command Motion activated switch with Dual-Brite kit carries a two year warranty.

An easy solution
I wanted to control my outside house lights with a motion detector with the minimum of rewiring and fuss; the SL-6053 does accomplish this goal. You simply replace your existing wall switch with the controller, just like installing a dimmer switch. You then mount the battery-operated wireless motion/daylight sensor to cover the desired area and that's it. You can choose to configure the light to be either off or dim when untriggered and to turn on to full brightness when motion is triggered. You can select the duration the lights stay on at full brightness until returning to the untriggered state. A light sensor ensures the unit stays off during the daytime. You can also use the larger of the two switches to manually turn on or off the lights; when turned on, it stays on; when turned off, the system again responds to motion detection. I had difficulties using the mode when the lights are just dimmed in untriggered mode. They did not seem to trigger properly and did not turn off during the day. I now use the mode where the lights are turned off in the untriggered mode and everything works fine. I have noticed that the motion detector is very sensitive and I had to set it to its lowest sensitivity setting to avoid continuously tripping on. After several months the unit still works well and I still don't know how often I will need to replace the batteries in the motion sensor (not hard to do). Although a little quirky, this device really is a simple and workable drop-in solution to achieve motion/light sensor control for existing home wiring. Also, since the unit includes dimmer settings, you should use incandescent or halogen bulbs, not CFLs. I would welcome a simple on/off version of this unit without dimmer to use with CFLs.
Simple set-up, as advertised
Overall, this was a straight-forward installation.
Pro's
- Installation was, at most, a 15-minute effort. NOTE: the SL-6017 switch/receiver is intended to replace a single-pole switch. If you have a three-way switch (that is, a circuit where two or more switches control the same lights, you will need the three-way switch that comes with SL-6023 or you will need technical support to jumper out one of your existing switches.)
- Uses existing lights - no need to replace expensive lights
- Dual-brite works as advertised
- 240-degree motion sensor has an excellent field of view and was easy to adjust.
Cons
- Cannot be used (by itself with a three-way switch) - see above
- My sensor failed within the first week. However, the Heath Zenith support center promptly sent me a new sensor.
Works for now
I used this system to trigger the porch lights, installing one switch and one sensor. The box says that the switch will handle 300W. I found the manual a little disorganized and did not read it at first.
After being frustrated at trying to trigger the light, I read the manual carefully and found out that:
1. Sensor takes 30s to turn on after you install batteries.
2. When changing modes e.g. TEST, 5 min etc, it takes 90s for the switch to reset itself.
So you have to be patient after after changing the modes.
So far it works. Hopefully, it will last.
