Customer Reviews

Mostly Good4
Tent went up fairly easy, nothing excessively complicated. It was very easy to open, no odd flaps for the zipper to get stuck on. The tent was up for four days and three nights. It rained every night. It held up great against the light rain, but the third night came with a wicked storm. The rain came down like the tent was being sprayed with a fire hose. I got dripped on a few times, one of the sides was a bit wet at the bottom and when morning came I noticed my dog's bedding was a bit wet. Tent held up nicely against the wind, though, and it did not flood like some tents would have in that kind of rain.

The roof of the tent is completely mesh. The rain fly covers it, but does not protect from cold summer nights. Also, the covers of the two mesh windows only zip up the sides, leaving the top open for the wind to come through. The door covers DO zip all the way around, but there are mesh bits above the door that are NEVER covered which means you can say goodbye to your privacy.

The tent fit myself on a twin air mattress, my German Shepherd's large crate, and a duffel bag, with enough space for a couple of extra bags and for my dog's crate door to open. I believe that it could fit 4 people without gear and 3 people with limited gear (no mattresses).

Overall, a good tent I would use again, but only if the weather forecast is good.

This should not be your ONLY tent3
We purchased this tent directly from Target as that is the only place Coleman distributes this model. We needed something smaller than the 8 person dome tent we already had as we only need room for two people.

Upon setting up the tent, we discovered some good things and some bad.

The Good:

* Size - although this is listed as a four person tent, it is ideal for two people if you utilize an air mattress. Includes some room for gear.

* Setup time - if you have ever set up a tent this is a breeze. Only takes a few minutes to assemble and you don't need a degree in rocket science to figure it out. One person can handle this without assistance.

* Ventilation - the tent itself has a screen roof, meaning there is always sufficient air flow even with the windows and doors closed. This can also be a bad thing (see below).

* Carry bag - most tents come out of their carrying bags and you wonder how they ever fit into them in the first place. Often times the bags never seem to be large enough. On this tent, we are able to fit the tent, rain fly, stakes, and poles into the bag on the first try every time. Sure another 3 inches of bag space in both length and width would be appreciated, but it does fit as designed so we really can't complain.

* Storage pockets - the tent does include two storage pockets inside for those small items you want to keep handy - glasses, cell phones, wallets etc. There is also a hook at the top which is great for holding a battery powered lantern or tent fan.

The Bad:

* The Privacy Wings - I'm not sure what real purpose these have other than to catch the wind. In a breeze if you setup the tent facing the wind this might be helpful, but in our case they eventually led to the tent catching so much wind that it would partially collapse. They also made entering and exiting the tent more difficult.

* The doormat - are you kidding Coleman? The mat is made from the same material as the bottom of the tent but it is essentially worthless. It needs to be staked down or it will blow away in the slightest breeze, yet it only has two stake locations in the middle of each side so every time the wind blows it folds over in half. If you want to use it, you need to poke holes into the corners and stake it down properly.

* The stakes - these are the cheapest thin wire stakes I have ever seen on a tent and they are garbage. You can push them into the ground by hand but that also means they will pull out just as easy. More often than not they get bent upon insertion. Save yourself the headaches and spend a few bucks to upgrade the stakes to a thicker metal or even plastic.

* Privacy - even if you know there is absolutely zero chance of rain, you still need to install the rainfly unless you don't care about your privacy because the entire top of the tent is vented. Even with the rainfly installed if someone had a low angle they could still look into the tent. I suppose this might be nice if you want to stare at the stars assuming you are not near others, but for the most part if you want to sleep in the open air why have a tent?

* Windows - the windows don't zip up along the top, so even in the closed position air comes right through. Of course with the ventilated top I suppose a zipper across the top of the window would have done no good, but it may have helped reduce some strong winds from coming right through the tent.

* Ventilation - in a cold night, there is no way to seal up the tent to stay warm. With the screened top and open-top windows there is no way to prevent air infiltration.

The Ugly:

* Wind resistance - this tent simply cannot stand up to a strong wind. We dealt with some fairly strong wind conditions and the next morning two of the rods had broken. Of course where each rod broke it also punctured the material, but luckily it was only the material that held the rods so the rain still wasn't an issue. It just felt that there were too few rods to support the tent and combined with the privacy wings that seem to catch the wind, this tent simply couldn't hold up when other tents at the campsite fared much better.

Luckily Coleman offers replacement rods from their website as well as a replacement rain fly, although I didn't expect to have to spend $35 for replacement parts for a tent that I only owned a year and have only used a few times.

All things considered we wouldn't purchase this tent again and will be going back to our larger 8 person tent simply because it is a igloo design that can hold up in extreme weather. We will probably use this tent when space is an issue but we will be sure to check the weather report before relying upon it, and this means it will only be a backup tent...not something I could consider to be acceptable as the only tent in our camping inventory.

huge disappointment!1
I purchased this tent for Memorial Day Weekend. I was almost certain it would rain and I thought I had nothing to worry about with a brand new tent and its "guarantee" to keep you dry. Of course we had a tarp, we were sure to set up the tent exactly as instructed. The tent totally leaked all around the bottom red panel and created a nice little pool of water on the floor. Luckily, we had an inflatable mattress that kept us dry overnight. I'm returning it tomorrow.
