Circling My MotherCircling My Mother by Mary Gordon
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $0.95
Not precisely a book about Alzheimer’s—I don’t think the word is ever mentioned—it’s a memoir of the author’s difficult mother, Anna Gagliano Gordon, who has led a full if troubled life, and now lives in a nursing home. Mary Gordon shows her own desperation, but explains that she writes about her mother in order to witness to “the mystery of an impossible love.”
Elegy for IrisElegy for Iris by John Bayley
Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $0.01
An elegy: not a lament but a celebration of the English novelist Iris Murdoch. The Then section is a delight to read, but the fifty pages of the Now section are the most gripping for their description of Iris’s Alzheimer’s. Bayley keeps a light touch on every page, and his comments on both marriage and dementia are endlessly original.
The Story of My Father: A MemoirThe Story of My Father: A Memoir by Sue Miller
Buy new: $11.01 / Used from: $0.14
A powerful story by a gifted novelist. Sue Miller (The Good Mother, Lost in the Forest) discovers that her father has been found wandering the roads at night, knocking on a stranger’s door at four in the morning to ask for help. Alzheimer’s has come on in a rush, and chaos threatens. Miller’s steady hand shows how the disease can both separate people and bring them closer together.
The Last of His Mind: A Year in the Shadow of Alzheimer'sThe Last of His Mind: A Year in the Shadow of Alzheimer's by John Thorndike
Buy new: $18.21 / Used from: $10.30
This is my own book, about the year I spent with my father as he lost his memory, lost his nouns, lost his ability to dress himself or carry on a conversation. It’s the book I would have wanted to read myself in those raw and troubling days.
The Family on Beartown Road: A Memoir of Love and CourageThe Family on Beartown Road: A Memoir of Love and Courage by Elizabeth Cohen
Buy new: $11.01 / Used from: $1.27
Here’s a story that stands out among Alzheimer’s memoirs, of a woman taking care of her one-year-old daughter and her eighty-year-old father: one a blooming child, learning everything, the other an anxious old man, forgetting everything. Poignant stories, clear writing and a candid delivery make for a quiet but gorgeous book.
The Caregiver: A Life With Alzheimer's, with new material (The Culture and Politics of Health Care Work)The Caregiver: A Life With Alzheimer's, with new material (The Culture and Politics of Health Care Work) by Aaron Alterra
Buy new: $15.56 / Used from: $3.94
Beautifully-written, perceptive, succinct, winning in every way. Alterra is a novelist, and it shows in the many scenes he describes in the book, as he looks after his elderly wife. No one is more observant about dementia, caregiving, family and marriage.
The Myth of Alzheimer's: The Story of a Disease, a Doctor, and a New Direction for Aging in the 21st CenturyThe Myth of Alzheimer's: The Story of a Disease, a Doctor, and a New Direction for Aging in the 21st Century by Whitehouse M.d.
Buy new: $18.96 / Used from: $12.50
This one is not a memoir, but a grounded and persuasive treatise on how drug companies and medical scientists—of which, by his own account, Whitehouse was one—have recast a condition akin to natural aging, turning it into a catastrophic disease to be fought by medicinal and genetic research. We would do better, the author explains, to pay more attention to actual patient care.
I Remain in DarknessI Remain in Darkness by Annie Ernaux
Buy new: $11.95 / Used from: $4.95
Raw, evocative and charged with emotion, these are enedited journal entries from the years when the author took care of her mother, and later visited her in a geriatric hospital in France. The title is taken from a line by Ernaux’s mother, the last words she ever set down: “Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit.” Few books lead me to actual tears, but this one did.
Death in Slow Motion: A Memoir of a Daughter, Her Mother, and the Beast Called Alzheimer'sDeath in Slow Motion: A Memoir of a Daughter, Her Mother, and the Beast Called Alzheimer's by Eleanor Cooney
Buy new: $13.29 / Used from: $0.77
A gritty report by the daughter of a woman who, in her prime, we all would have wanted to know, someone “hip, cool, brilliant, funny, sane.” As Mary Durant slides deeper into Alzheimer’s, the job of taking care of her often overwhelms the author and her partner, but the ride is brilliantly described.
Caring for Mother: A Daughter's Long GoodbyeCaring for Mother: A Daughter's Long Goodbye by Virginia Stem Owens
Buy new: $12.71 / Used from: $14.87
A slender, honest, beautifully-written book. Virginia Owens helped look after her mother for a year and a half at home, and visited her almost daily for the next five years. Her report on nursing homes is devastating. She’s never cold or bitter, but her dismay is evident. She also feels, as all caregivers must, that she herself “could have done more, done better” with her mother.
A Troubled Guest: Life and Death StoriesA Troubled Guest: Life and Death Stories by Nancy Mairs
Buy new: $16.00 / Used from: $2.41
While not actually a book about Alzheimer’s, I list Mairs’ book here because I found it so enlightening on the subject of loss. This is the essence of Alzheimer’s: how it robs the patient of memory, language and reason. With every paragraph, it’s clear that Mairs understands what it is to lose our human capacities.
The Bad Daughter: Betrayal and ConfessionThe Bad Daughter: Betrayal and Confession by Julie Hilden
Buy new: $18.95 / Used from: $0.01
A hard story of early-onset Alzheimer’s and abandonment, first in one direction, then the other, as mother and daughter both suffer from their decisions. Not a book for judgmental readers, but written with unflinching, even reckless honesty. Every detail in it seemed real to me, and every emotion.
Mothering Mother: A Daughter's Humorous and Heartbreaking MemoirMothering Mother: A Daughter's Humorous and Heartbreaking Memoir by Carol D. O'Dell
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $14.85
A wrenching set of vignettes about O’Dell’s outspoken, demanding and prejudiced mother. Once a revered minister, now she’s driving everyone in the O’Dell household crazy . This is a direct portrait of how disruptive Alzheimer’s can be on a family, as the patient’s selfish demands threaten to overwhelm everyone else.
The Forgetting: Alzheimer's: Portrait of an EpidemicThe Forgetting: Alzheimer's: Portrait of an Epidemic by David Shenk
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
This is not a memoir, but the classic text on Alzheimer’s. Though not a long book, its scope is huge, covering the history of Alzheimer’s, its development in the brain, and its devastating medical and social effects. These aren’t cheerful topics, but the author’s tone is hopeful, never somber. A perfectly written book, not a word out of place.
Looking After: A Sons' MemoirLooking After: A Sons' Memoir by John Daniel
Buy used from: $0.09
Like many other Alzheimer’s memoirs, this turns out to be about much more than a difficult disease. It’s a rich portrait of a woman, her son, and other members of their family: evocative, redemptive, and fully satisfying. With its many stories, and with the author’s precise and evocative language, it’s closer to Nabokov or Virginia Woolf than to The Thirty-Six Hour Day.
Stolen Mind: The Slow Disappearance of Ray DoernbergStolen Mind: The Slow Disappearance of Ray Doernberg by Myrna Doernberg
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $0.01
One of the earliest dementia memoirs, written in the mid-eighties, about a man who dies from Binswanger’s disease—a near twin, as far as symptoms go, of Alzheimer’s. No book goes as deeply, as slowly, as repetitively into the decline and death of a dementia patient. Hard reading, perhaps, but utterly compelling.
Do You Remember Me?: A Father, a Daughter, and a Search for the SelfDo You Remember Me?: A Father, a Daughter, and a Search for the Self by Judith Levine
Buy new: $22.23 / Used from: $0.01
Levine’s "Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children from Sex," raised a ruckus among the socially and politically conservative. This memoir about her father’s dementia is less controversial, but shows how Alzheimer’s radiates through whole families and communities. An articulate report on the wide repercussions of the disease.
Still AliceStill Alice by Lisa Genova
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $7.09
A popular novel, seen from the point of view of a 51-year-old woman with early onset Alzheimer’s. Though the writing is occasionally awkward, the story itself is compelling, as Alice Howland, a Harvard professor of psychology, descends through the inevitable stages of dementia.
Hard to Forget: An Alzheimer's StoryHard to Forget: An Alzheimer's Story by Charles P. Pierce
Buy used from: $0.04
This is Pierce’s story of the Alzheimer’s prevalent in his family, interlaced with scientific explanations of the disease, and interviews with the researchers who are trying to fight it. Pierce is a journalist and a story-teller, and I found the book gripping.
Voices Of Alzheimer's: Courage, Humor, Hope, And Love In The Face Of DementiaVoices Of Alzheimer's: Courage, Humor, Hope, And Love In The Face Of Dementia by Betsy Peterson
Buy new: $13.16 / Used from: $1.98
A short history of the author’s own experience with her husband, then a compilation of hundreds of quotations from patients, family members, caregivers, authors and counselors, all speaking about dementia. There’s no narrative to the quotes, though they are roughly grouped according to topic. I drank the book in and never tired of it. I wanted to read on and on.
Measure of the Heart: A Father's Alzheimer's, A Daughter's ReturnMeasure of the Heart: A Father's Alzheimer's, A Daughter's Return by Mary Ellen Geist
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.34
A short history of the author’s own experience with her husband, then a compilation of hundreds of quotations from patients, family members, caregivers, authors and counselors, all speaking about dementia. There’s no narrative to the quotes, though they are roughly grouped according to topic. I drank the book in and never tired of it. I wanted to read on and on.
No More Words : A Journal of My Mother, Anne Morrow LindberghNo More Words : A Journal of My Mother, Anne Morrow Lindbergh by Reeve Lindbergh
Buy new: $10.26 / Used from: $0.01
Another book that’s not precisely about Alzheimer’s. Reeve Lindbergh looks after her mother, the well-known Anne Morrow Lindbergh, after Anne suffers a series of strokes and pretty much stops speaking. The fascination to me was the tremendous frustration of living with a loved one who’s gone silent.
Dancing with Rose: Finding Life in the Land of Alzheimer'sDancing with Rose: Finding Life in the Land of Alzheimer's by Lauren Kessler
Buy used from: $7.12
An inside view of life inside a residential unit for dementia patients, seen through the eyes of someone doing the repetitive, malodorous and exhausting work. Night and day, all over the country, the job of looking after the elderly and the forgetful is being carried out by hardworking resident assistants, usually women, earning a painfully low minimum wage.
25 Months: A Memoir25 Months: A Memoir by Linda McK. Stewart
Buy new: $22.00 / Used from: $0.01
Most Alzheimer’s cases develop over the course or months or years. Jack Stewart’s came on so fast that his wife thought he’d had a stroke, and from one day to the next Linda Stewart’s life shrunk to fit the limits of a confused and forgetful husband. A scary scenario, and a spirited report.
Memory'S Ghost: The Nature Of Memory And The Strange Tale Of Mr. MMemory'S Ghost: The Nature Of Memory And The Strange Tale Of Mr. M by Philip J. Hilts
Buy new: $16.15 / Used from: $2.58
An engrossing study of memory, anchored on the history of Henry Molaison, who died in December of 2008. His name had been shielded for 50 years, but as “H.M.” he was famous in the world of brain studies, ever since 1953 when a doctor removed his hippocampus and parts of his temporal lobes. Philip Hilts was the first to bring his history to the general public.
Losing My Mind: An Intimate Look at Life with Alzheimer'sLosing My Mind: An Intimate Look at Life with Alzheimer's by Thomas DeBaggio
Buy used from: $4.26
A first-person account of early-onset Alzheimer’s, somewhat muffled by the many long quotations from the magazines Biochemistry and Neurology, and the 1999 “Progress Report on Alzheimer’s Disease” from the National Institute on Aging. DeBaggio is at his best when he sticks to his own life and describes how dementia is undermining it, even as he writes.
Living in the Labyrinth: A Personal Journey Through the Maze of Alzheimer'sLiving in the Labyrinth: A Personal Journey Through the Maze of Alzheimer's by Diana McGowin
Buy new: $12.82 / Used from: $0.74
The earliest book I know of written by an Alzheimer’s patient. Short, hopeful, and engaging, it naturally doesn’t cover the later stages of the disease, but offers a valuable perspective on the start of early-onset dementia. The author was only 45 when her first memory lapses and disorientation began to affect her.
Making an Exit: A Mother-Daughter Drama with Alzheimer's, Machine Tools, and LaughterMaking an Exit: A Mother-Daughter Drama with Alzheimer's, Machine Tools, and Laughter by Elinor Fuchs
Buy used from: $4.89
Elinor Fuchs shepherds her mother through ten years of “the Emergency,” with stays in an assisted-living facility and a nursing home. To the end, Lillian Kessler is full of spirit and confusion and lively language, a “word salad” that Fuchs quotes throughout the book.
