Its not working out like I thought it would: UPDATE 12/09
The car-seat is huge! We have a Mazda 5 van and we have to have the drivers seat all the way forward and my husband is 6'2". So thats not working. It obstructs my view when I turn around to see out the back. You cant use a mirror to see the baby the seat is too large. UPDATE We have gotten used to it. He is now forward facing and we can use the rear view mirror with an extention to see him.
The straps are too wide for my 6mo. old in rear facing. He has a long torso and the shoulder straps come from his mid back on the highest one allowed in rear facing. also the chest clip seems to be flimsy and cheaper plastic than our combi infant carrier. UPDATE: Nothing has broken. However the chest clip does tend to slided down.
When he falls asleep his head is slumped forward because it is not reclined enough. Even we practiced forward facing and the difference in reclining mode is a joke. UPDATE: that still remains however He is a little bigger but sometimes we find his head forward, asleep.
The loops on the side to tether the buckles so you don't sit the baby on them only works when you have a big baby and the straps are long enough to reach, ours don't. UPDATE: yeah but...
Basically all the bells and whistles I spent a little more for are not working for me. Aside from the side loading feature. UPDATE: the side loding and the swivel feature was well worth the money spent. I enjoy this car seat very much. I look back at all the complaints I had and they just dont matter that much anymore.
The fabric is nice and most of the materials seem great quality. (except noted above) UPDATE: yes very easy to remove and clean.
I am still on the fence about returning it. Its not really working out for us. I say that out of the luxury and features I purchased it for. Not its actual purpose, keeping my precious cargo safe.
I would not recommend buying it online. I learned my lesson that some items need to be tested out first. UPDATE: yes Make sure it fits in your car.
Great for moms with special needs
While we know about the weight-limit constraints...this product is great, especially for someone with chronic pain or physical difficulty getting a child into carseat.
I had my eye on this product for awhile. I did a lot of research online and was saddened to see that the weight-limit issues detered anyone from really reviewing it -- missing the fact that a parent with physical limitations could really benefit from using it.
Well, I have a lot of weakness and muscle pain in my arms and back so I bit the bullet and bought it anyway. It is quite a pleasure to be able to turn my daughter toward me to get her into the seat. I even will sit beside her (in a parked car) and turn her toward me to feed her snacks or give her a bottle.
I did not have problems with installation. I'm not thrilled with the ease of loosening and tightening the straps --- but that is really my only complaint.
One point: I believe the instructions say to use the grey infant pad when rear facing. Well, I couldn't get my 5-month-old, 14 lb daughter into the seat with the pad. I called the customer service line at Combi and the rep said it is only to help a baby fit -- and if the baby is rear facing, but too big for the pads, take them (the pads) out.
And when Combi increases the weight limit, I will buy a new one too.
Perfect for the Honda Element
My baby needs to face rear, but has outgrown her infant seat. The rear seat in the Honda Element sits back from the door opening which would make a normal rear facing seat very difficult to put her in. I would have to climb in from the other side and do it from inside the vehicle. With 2 kids, that wouldn't work.
The Combi is perfect for the Honda Element. I turn the seat forward to put her in. tighten the straps, and turn her to face the rear. She loves it and can either see out the window, or easily fall asleep.
The seat seems well built with nice materials. The extra padding is nice. I have posted 2 photos of the seat in the Element.
But, the release to loosen the harness is hard to get to, and the harness does not loosen by much. I do like that there are loops to hold the straps while you put the baby in. Magnets would work, too.
