Amazon.com Product Description
Take your digital life on the road with the HP Compaq Presario V6120US notebook PC, a great choice for a desktop replacement for your mobile office. It features a centerpiece 15.4-inch high-definition BrightView LCD with a widescreen aspect ratio. It's also a multi-media workhorse, with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 video/graphics card (up to 128 MB of shared video RAM), Windows Media Center operating system, HP's Photosmart Premier image editing/management software, and a LightScribe DVD/CD that can label discs after they're burned. Optimized for mobile performance, this 6.6-pound notebook is powered by the 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 dual-core processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and higher throughput for simultaneous computing tasks. Other features include an 100 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed DDR2 RAM (2 GB maximum), integrated 54g Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g), and an ExpressCard 34/54 slot. This is a Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is slightly above average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Processor: The 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 256 KB L2 cache (for a 512 KB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
- CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a full-sized 101-key keyboard and touchpad with four-way scroll zone on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
The 15.4-inch LCD offers a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The widescreen display gives increases the width of the notebook's display while giving the computer the form factor of a smaller computer, so it takes up less space on your desk or in your briefcase. Video is powered by an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 graphics/video card with up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card and built-in Altec Lansing speakers.

HP Laptops
I've own this laptop for about 3 months. This is my 3rd HP laptop over 10 years or so. No issues, no problems. Currently running XP and Vista is on order. PC Express slot was a problem due to my PC Cards I owned but it seems all new laptops are now coming with the PC Express slot.
Shop your specs and prices but I'm happy with my purchase made in December 2006. Always better prices 'down the road' but I needed the new one. Prices were better here at Amazon and better than Dell at the time. Dell charges sales tax which makes a 6% difference in price real fast.
Great budget laptop.
Overall a great budget laptop. Good features and great specs OTB for the price. Plan on upgrading the battery - the standard 6-cell is weak. Might want to upgrade to 2 gig of ram if you plan on running Vista. The laptop has an annoying ridge around the base, but it's not that big of deal.
Big Bang for the Buck
I've used this laptop for more than 10 months and have absolutely had no problems. I've upgraded to Vista Home Premiums for a few months now without any concerns. The unit is light weight and durable. I dropped it countless times (not recommended)and didn't experience any loss in function, etc. Lightscribe is absolutely great. It's really nice to be able to label my DVD's without any additional out of pocket costs. I only use this laptop via wifi and have had no connection problems anywhere in my home.
