Amazon.com Product Description
Bring your entertainment center with you wherever you roam with the HP Pavilion dv9060us notebook PC, which comes with an ExpressCard TV tuner that enables you to watch standard NTSC television broadcasts right on your laptop. It features an amazingly bright, widescreen 17-inch BrightView display--perfect for multitasking between document windows and watching movies in their native aspect ratio. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the included remote control, which stores conveniently in the ExpressCard slot. This notebook also incorporates an HD DVD drive that's compatible with the new high-definition DVD disc format. Enjoy amazingly crisp and vibrantly colorful imagery from this new format. The optical drive also incorporates a dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner that enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc.

This notebook is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. The dual-execution core T5500 Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, and it features a 1.66 GHz speed, lightning quick 667 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache.

It offers a cool, modern look with a durable, high-gloss piano black finish and inlaid design inspired by Zen rock gardens as well as a subtle blue backlit media control panel that responds to the slightest touch. Other hardware features include a large 240 GB storage capacity from dual 120 GB hard drives, 2 GB of installed RAM (maxing capacity), an integrated Nvidia GeForce 7600 video/graphics card with up to 256 MB of discrete video RAM, tri-mode Wi-Fi LAN (802.11a/b/g), a wide variety of connectivity options, multi-format memory card reader, integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam, HDMI A/V output, and Windows XP Media Center edition operating system. This is a Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: You'll be able to store large libraries of digital audio, video, and photos on the dual 120 GB hard drives (5400 RPM), for 240 GB of total storage--one of the largest capacities you'll find currently in multimedia notebooks (October 2006).
  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor has a 1.66 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory maximizes the capacity of this notebook, which is a little small for multimedia-centric laptops. But you'll be able to handle immersive 3-D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications right out of the box.
  • CD/DVD Drive: This HP notebook offers the next generation of DVD entertainment with the HD DVD ROM optical drive, which provides the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound as well as backward compatibility with standard DVD movie discs as well as content burned onto DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM. It also incorporates a multi-format DVD/CD burner, which is compatible with dual-layer (DL) discs that can hold up to 8.5 GB of data.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 7600 graphics card, which was chosen by PC World magazine as one of the 100 Best Products of 2006 (July, 2006). It has 256 MB of discrete video RAM for home-theater quality video. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content. It also offers full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 and true high dynamic-range (HDR) lighting. And it's ready for the next step in graphics processing--SLI technology (Scalable Link Interface)--which delivers twice the performance of a single GPU configuration by allowing two graphics cards to run in parallel.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The Intel PRO wireless LAN 3945ABG provides a tri-mode network connection (supporting 802.11a/b/g), with throughput up to 54 Mbps at 5 GHz (802.11a) and 2.4 GHz (802.11g). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. The included TV tuner is integrated into an ExpressCard. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video)
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • 2 headphone jacks, 1 with SPDIF digital audio capability
  • 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Expansion Port 3 connector
  • 1 IR receiver
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. The HP Photosmart Premier photo and imaging software makes digital photography fast and easy by helping you organize, edit, protect, and share your digital pictures and video clips. Sonic's DigitalMedia Plus makes it easy and intuitive to back up your pictures, videos, and music onto DVD-R/+R media for safekeeping. It also comes with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), PC Recovery, MSN Encarta Plus, Microsoft Money, Muvee AutoProducer, and RealRhapsody.

This notebook measures 15.16 x 11.65 x 1.57 inches and weighs 7.8 pounds.

Nice on the Inside2
This is a fast notebook with a lot of powerful multimedia capabilities, I bought mine about 1.5 years ago and loved it, but over the years (year), it has not held up. Most of the keys are now blank (I've never worn the keys off of anything, mind you, just this one), and the shiny finish is terribly delicate and gets scratched up if you just glance at it sharply.

But those are the minor things. The major thing, and the reason I'm recommending yo DO NOT buy this computer, is the hinge on the left hand side. Just google "Notebook Hinge Crack" or "Hingefix" along with DV9000 and you will discover that there are several whole websites devoted solely to the horribly flawed hinge construction. And they're busy little websites -- this isn't an occasional problem, it's a basic feature of the way this computer is made, that the hinge suffers from an unfortunate tendency to fall apart catastrophically under normal use.

My hinge died quite suddenly about a month ago, not from any rough handling or dropping, just because the design and materials are crap. I have to open and close it very, very slowly and carefully while holding the left side of the screen together, which is even more awkward than it sounds. Apparently if you are firm with them, HP will fix the hinge at no charge, but you have to send it off for a week. There are instructions on how to fix it yourself on those DV9000 Hinge websites, but it's not a DIY project for the faint of heart.

So unless you plan to place your laptop gently on a desk, use gloves to touch it, and refrain from opening and closing it, you'd be better off buying something that is nice and sturdy inside *and* out.

Outstanding Quality5
This is a gaming notebook PC. Its great for computer games and more... The picture clarity is excellent. I currently have a hp dv8000 with XP and this one with the Vista. There are some benefits and very minor drawbacks to each.

This one is better in the area of the picture quality/the moniter/technological arena/ and the system is a little different. This one has a webcam built in and has all the regular stuff such as DVD, remote control, everything else the old model had. The moniter is also thinner. Mine came with Vista and its a little harder to get used to but it is improved in some areas over the XP.

'Virtual Reality Delivered' GeForce Go Graphics, dedicated video memory deliver advanced 3D Graphics for ultra-realistic gaming and video effects.
17 Inch High Definition Brightview Widescreen display
HDMI port, high definition output to your flat screen TV.

This is a great laptop and has a lot of different features you would love.

dv9060us2
I expected a little more performance for a top of the line Hewlett-Packark Laptop. Over all even with 2 gigabyt's of memeory the laptop is sluggish and hanges up. Guess I will have to wait to see if the VISTA upgrade helps. It came with an HD DVD movie however it was not for playing on a US region DVD player. It was for France, I called Amazon, they wanted me to return the entire laptop, wish I had now. They credited my account $10.00 finallt for a $25.00 HD DVD. I will not purchase any tech items from Amazon again
