![]() | Eureka Apex 2XT Adventure 7-Foot by 5-Foot Two-Person Tent
Buy new: $88.18 / Used from: $72.99 Absolutely love this tent. Bathtub floor helps keep the outside water out, and the ventalation keeps the condensation to almost nothing. Plenty weatherproof (tested!) as well. At 5lbs 12oz though it's a bit much for solo hiking.

![]() | Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Mattress
Buy new: $29.95 - $39.95 I prefer foam to inflatable sleeping pads. The foam provides good insulation, is really light, and since I'm a heavy guy isn't going to deflate while I'm sleeping. I find I'm also less likely to roll off of foam pads. They are bulky however.

![]() | Smith & Wesson SWBH Bush Hog Kukri 17.5" Blade with Sheath
Buy new: $26.59 I'll admit this mostly just looked cool and that's probably the first reason why I got it. I rarely bring this and I'd recommend a saw for campsite/camp fire uses, but this has been extremely effective for bushwacking.
|
![]() | Pocket Chainsaw
Buy new: $23.79 Just in case you don't like carrying around the heavy blade to chop things up, this is a great alternative.
|
![]() | MSR Isopro Canister Fuel 8oz
Needs no explination. Fuel for your stove (see the stove description).
|
![]() | Marmot Precip Rain Jacket for Men
Buy new: $89.99 - $109.99 I've become really impressed with the Marmot brand and now own several of their products. This is the jacket i use for backpacking. The pictures make the jackets look a lot heavier than they are, but the jackets are actually extremely light. They are also very durable.
|
![]() | MSR Reactor Stove System
Buy new: $139.95 This stove is AWESOME. Don't bother with self igniting as matches/lighter works just find under all conditoins and weigh less (and are less expensive). This little guy will turn red hot in about 30 seconds, and will boil water so hard it shakes and rattles the pot in about 3 minutes.
|
![]() | Platypus Bottle 2+L (80 ounces)
Buy new: $9.95 Memories of clunky nalgeans are now things of the past. These are great. Durable, super light, and roll up when emplty. I have two 2L that I carry at all times along with my hydration system.
|
![]() | Sea to Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack
Buy new: $22.32 - $41.95 Nothing makes the trip miserable like a wet sleeping bag. DONT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU. These bags both waterproof (but don't go swimming) and compress their contents.
|
![]() | 'SUPER-Bright Luxeon LED Head Lamp - Comfort-Stretch Headband
Buy new: $9.99 Great head light, selectable settings and really light. You'll need a flashlight that can go with you and allow you to keep both hands free.
|
![]() | Leatherman 830846 Skeletool Multitool
Buy new: Too low to display A great multi-tool. The knife keeps a good edge, it doesn't weigh too much, and the vice grips are more useful than I ever thought they'd be. Doesn't have a can opener which is the only draw back.
|
![]() | ORIKASO FLAT FOLDING SOLO SET
Buy new: $10.99 - $20.82 Forget those heavy cook sets from the days of boy scouts, this set is about 5oz and folds flat. Yeah it'll wear out after several dozen uses, but it's definitely worth it.
|
![]() | Telescopic Walking Stick
Buy new: $16.24 walking sticks make a bigger difference than you'd think. I never had a decent pair in boyscouts, but now you I see all the Thru-hikers with a pair. They will save your knees and your back, and give your hands something to do. You don't need to go expensive here, these will do just fine.
|
![]() | Adventure Medical Kits Light and Fast Trail Kit
Buy new: $28.40 A nice small but complete medical kit. You'll want to augment it with some bengay and some more ibprofin.
|
![]() | 550lb. Type III Paracord
Buy new: $2.25 - $10.50 You absolutely need rope. This stuff is light and strong. Don't rappel with it, but it's great for gear. I also don't cut mine beyond 50 feet.
|
![]() | Verglas Gaiters by Outdoor Research
Buy new: $44.95 - $45.00 Gaiters really make a huge difference if you have snow or wet conditions. No one likes hiking with wet socks! That being said, you don't really need these in the summertime or for dry conditions. Many people prefer the half or low gaiters, but I've found these to be comfortable and they offer a little more protection.
|
![]() | Timberland Men's Chocurua Trail GTX Boot
Buy new: $79.99 - $114.99 Gore-Tex boots are awesome. You can definitely get by with any other sturdy shoe, as long as it has good ankle support, but when it comes to comfort, durability, and water-resistance, there ain't nothing like it.
|
![]() | Garmin GPS 60Cx Handheld GPS Navigator
Buy new: $199.99 You can go with a less expensive model, but personally I spent the little bit extra to have the other features included with the 60CSx. Color, on the fly navigation routes, tracking and rechargability.
|
![]() | AMK Rescue Signal Mirror
Buy new: $7.49 - $11.49 If you get into an emergency situation, getting someone else's attention is the most important step in getting out of the woods. If you're in a clear area, nothing beats the power of the sun. Simply stand facing the sun and aim the hole in the mirror whever you want to signal, and wiggle the mirror.
You also need a whistle for night/incliment weather.
|
![]() | Ultimate Survival Technologies JetScream Whistle (Black)
Buy new: $9.95 can't get light through the trees, sound carries much further than you'd think in a dead silent woods.
|
![]() | Smartwool Expedition Trekking Sock 10 131
Buy new: $16.95 - $19.95 Smartwool socks are amazing. For cold weather hikes you'll really wish you had wool socks right about when your toes go numb. These socks work great summer or winter and I bring three pair on any multi-night trek.
|
![]() | Eureka Solo Spitfire Tent
Buy new: $79.71 / Used from: $74.99 Possibly the best 1 man tent, if you want something light (2lbs 3oz!) and you want something a little roomier than a bivouac, this little tent works great.
