Flawed & Dangerous!
Received this oven as a wedding gift and enjoyed it for approximately nine months. It cooked fairly evenly, offered convection speed, and looked attractive in chrome.
Unfortunately--like many reviewers on Rival's sister unit (the TO600)--we started experiencing problems with the control knobs getting stuck. In our case it was the all important timer knob which would freeze while COOKING AND COUNTING DOWN. The unit is fairly quiet and if you aren't paying close attention (and who is during the morning rush?) then suddenly your 4-minute bagel has been broiling for 15-minutes and is nearly on fire! Given the other reviews on Rival countertop ovens this is obviously not a problem isolated to just our unit.
Rival did make a digital touchpad version of this oven but it has been discontinued. And even if it were available--a call to Rival revealed that they were only willing to replace our unit with the exact same model. No thanks! Taking the recommendation of a major consumer magazine, we've purchased a Cuisinart TOB-175 with DIGITAL timer and would highly recommend it.
Even bakes yeast breads!
Rival CO606 Stainless-Steel 6-Slice Countertop Convection Toaster Oven with Broiler
I purchased the Rival C0606 at a local department store after my Euro-Pro/Bravetti convection oven went up in flames through no fault of mine.
PROS: This oven has * manual controls which I prefer because they are easier and faster to use and allow more precise time/temperature adjustments. The crumb tray is removable from the * front. There's a full * 60 minute timer and a Stay On setting. This oven is * hotter than most and will cook/bake/broil most foods very fast. IMPORTANT: Make sure the rack(s) are positioned according to the Owner's Manual instructions for best results. Besides a 12" pizza, this oven will accommodate any ROUND pan or oven-proof utensil 12" or less. Since every appliance has its own quirks, some experimentation and continuous use should make you an expert user.
Some Tips for this brand/model and all toaster ovens.
1. Do NOT use a vinegar-based cleaning product on the exterior of a stainless steel appliance. It will permanently discolor the finish.
2. The top of the oven can be used for keep-warm and proofing yeast bread functions, but you MUST place a protective pan or heat-proof plate underneath the item to prevent burning/sticking. I find disposable aluminum pie plates and pans very useful for this purpose as well as for cooking/baking/broiling because they conduct heat very fast which saves time and $ energy. For proofing yeast breads, set the Temp at Keep Warm-150 degrees and carefully monitor the process. DO NOT try to quick proof yeast breads INSIDE the oven as it is too warm and too confined for this purpose.
3. This oven will bake a perfect yeast bread loaf. NOTE: all bread pans should be placed on a cookie sheet or broiler pan to prevent over-baking of the bottom and sides. If the top starts to over brown, place a piece of aluminum foil or disposable aluminum pie plate over the top of the pan and continue baking for the recommended time. You have a choice of lowering the temps by 25 degrees or decreasing the cook/bake time by 5-10 mins. in a convection oven. The cook must ALWAYS carefully monitor the item(s) as they cook.
4. You can quickly preheat the oven using the Toast function or, to save $ energy, preheat the oven at Keep Warm-150 degrees and increase to the desired Temp 5 minutes before you're ready to cook/bake/broil your item.
5. An inexpensive oven thermometer is a MUST in a cook/bake/broil toaster oven. This is a 99 cent item that can be bent so it will fit under the lowest rack setting on the crumb tray.
6. When the oven door is opened to insert food, the oven temperature will take a dramatic plunge because the pan/food absorbs heat: SOLUTION: preheat the oven to 25-50 degrees warmer than your recipe requires. Quickly insert item and then wait until the oven reaches the correct temperature. Then reset the Temp to the original correct temperature. This is why you MUST have an oven thermometer in the center of the oven. It is impossible to guess what the temperature is in any oven and temperature fluctuation is the main cause of uneven or unsatisfactory results. The Rival C0606 maintains a level temperature unless the door is opened too frequently (try not to peek!).
7. Broil/roast over a shallow pan of water to keep the food moist, to catch drips, and to prevent smoking/fumes. The convection fan will evaporate the water quickly, so check the water level part way through cooking. Insert a rack into a pan, add water to one-half the pan's depth, and then arrange the item(s) on the rack. You can also make gravies and sauces with this method, but the cooking process MUST be carefully monitored, as above.
I have never used a toaster oven to toast sandwich bread as the results are uneven. However, I use the Broil setting to make garlic bread which only needs to be toasted on the cut side anyway. In my opinion, no toaster oven exists that can toast bread better than a standard toaster because of the difference in design and the distance of the heating elements to the bread. The coils in a toaster heat up instantly and are closer to the bread, providing more even and consistent results. Plus, the light/dark functions are more flexible. Some very small toaster ovens can toast bread evenly, but it's hit and miss if you can find one that does the job.
Ask your friends and neighbors to recycle their disposable aluminum pans by saving them for you. Check for holes and tears before using. Most of these aluminum pans are perfectly sized for a toaster oven: oblong, square, round, and oval.
Overall, I am very pleased with the performance of the Rival C0606. As with all appliances, keep the Owner's Manual handy for reference: DON'T GUESS.
Good product for a great price
My mom also has this model of Rival and loved hers, so despite the other bad reviews of the product I decided to buy it. It is a great buy for the price.
The 2 racks and 2 trays accessories that comes with it makes it easier to use. Very easy to operate with lots of room. Buttons are easy to read. I fixed steaks, fish, cookies, toast, etc in it with no problems. Does not seem to get too hot as some other brand reviews say.
It has a nice shape also with the steel and black trim with a slight curve, so it would go well with many kitchens. Easy to clean also. So far all my corning ware and other baking dishes fit in it fine. Amazon packed it very well with solid double box cushioned in styrofoam.
