Could Use more Stuffing!
PRO: one step process

CON: Does not reduce the file size significantly. Not universal or widely used outside of the Apple realm.

I have been a fan of the Stuffit application since it was first developed in the late 80's. I was especially supportive because I admired the fact that a high school kid in New York named Raymond Lau created it and offered it as a shareware product. Not only was the price right, but it worked and it worked well. What a vision he had.

Fast-forward to today's Stuffit Deluxe 2009. The product is 20 years old and still servicing the Apple world well. It offer compression, expansion, encryption primarily for the Apple but it has crossed over to servicing the PC world also.

When it works, I love it. When it doesn't, I'm perplexed as to why. I personally find it a bit on the frustrating side. I, wrongly, imagined that stuffit would really compress my files so that I may be able to send larger packets or more pictures across the internet. I am not finding this to be the case. The Zip part is fine; that is, collecting unrelated documents or data and zipping them into a file for faster transfer. From an organizational standpoint, it's great. But when it comes to photos and quick clips, reality is that no matter how you compress a jpeg or mpeg, the computer receiving that file has to have QuickTime to view it. That's a pretty popular, standard, free program, but I have friends and I'll bet you have friends who don't have it and wonder why they can't see the slideshow I just sent them. I don't know what you do about that.

Testing the software between a friend's computer and mine, she, residing several states away, I emailed her a simple slideshow made in iPhoto. The unstuffed version took about 5 minutes to upload to the web, and I'm on a DSL cable. It took almost 3 minutes to download to her computer; she, too, is on a DSL cable connection. The zipped version took a long time as well although not as long as the unzipped version. It took almost 2 minutes.

I was not able to achieve the 10-15% compression for MP3 files, or the 20-30% compression for the JPEG files, and especially not the 98% compression for documentation. This was a BIG let down.

StuffIt X is a new archive file format powered by Aladdin's ATOM compression technology. StuffIt X makes archives with a .SITX file extension. The StuffIt X file format integrates compression with security and safety options. Requires Stuffit Expander v7.0 or later (MAC) or Stuffit Deluxe v7.0 (MAC)/v8.0 (WIN) or later to create or open.

Since some people won't even have QuickTime (or Acrobat Reader), don't expect many to have Stuffit Deluxe, v.8! But if you .zip files everyone can unzip them, since that is now built into the later versions of Windows. Sitx is a new compression program, which, it seems very few people have. I sent a .sitx to a knowledgeable PC saavy friend of mine. She was not able to open the file.

Sometimes I feel like I just want to talk with an expert to walk me through the when's and whys of this program, like I can when I call Apple Care. A little handholding is always appreciated!

I Doubt I'd Buy It Again--Rarely Needed
This software works fine for compressing and uncompressing files which you want to bundle and send elsewhere, or the reverse. At one time it was the THE way for doing this on a Mac. Flash forward to those of us on Snow Leopard in 2009 though and everything I now have on my Mac, either natively or as a freeware or open source add on, is the doing the same job day in and day out and doing it perfectly. The very rare use I make of Stuffit is when I have a compressed archive to decompress and everything else won't do it. Then I try Stuffit on it and sometimes Stuffit can open it. Stuffit also will open it when it can only give you part of the contents as the compression file is somehow flawed. Thus, I end up using Stuffit maybe once a month at most. If you handle tons of compressed files day in and day out (I don't), this may make it still worth the purchase price for you. For most users, however, it is overkill that they don't really need.

Well worth it
Very glad I purchased this software. It makes my downloads more efficient and accurate and I feel I can use it for other things as I read the manual.
