![]() | Costa Rican Natural History
Buy new: $39.10 / Used from: $22.99 First for several reasons: a) it's the first book on Costa Rica I ever used - in the mid-1980s; b) it was a ground-breaking compilation of expert knowledge at the time of publishing and c) it's still one of my most used reference works.

![]() | Travellers' Wildlife Guides Costa Rica (Travellers' Wildlife Guides) by Les Beletsky
Buy new: $18.45 / Used from: $16.75 A portable overview of Costa Rican wildlife which will be handy for those with a passing interest in wildlife. I rarely use it since I prefer the more detailed guides, but it is popular with travellers.

![]() | A Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica (Comstock Book) by F. Gary Stiles
Buy new: $26.37 / Used from: $7.99 Stiles & Skutch is the original bird guide to Costa Rica and my copy is pretty well thumbed by now. Apart from identification tips, there is a wealth of detail on natural history. A must!
|
![]() | The Birds of Costa Rica: A Field Guide by Richard Garrigues
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $15.75 The new Garrigues field guide. I don't yet have a copy - it's in the mail! - but this guide has been very favourably reviewed. It's more up-to-date than the older guide (and birders will most readily notice that many a name has changed in the last two decades) and - more importantly for some - weighs about two thirds as much. This will certainly be with me on my forthcoming trip!

![]() | The Mammals of Costa Rica: A Natural History and Field Guide by Mark Wainwright
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $15.75 A great little guide to the country's mammals.
|
![]() | A Field Guide to the Mammals of Central America and Southeast Mexico by Fiona A. Reid
Buy new: $53.96 / Used from: $26.99 However, this is the mammal guide I carry. I bought it as soon as it came out for work in Nicaragua and fell in love with it. The illustrations are ground-breaking, the text hugely informative and it covers the whole of Central America. The only snag is the weight.

![]() | A Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica by Twan Leenders
Buy used from: $49.95 This wee gem seems to be out of print (a 2nd edition in the pipeline?). A great shame since the concept of a portable one-volume guide to the reptiles and amphibians of a Neotropical country is unique. Not everything is in here, but theres enough - and enough information - to make this a "must buy"! Like many of the other guides here, it is useful in the rest of Central America and beyond.

![]() | The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica: A Herpetofauna between Two Continents, between Two Seas by Jay M. Savage
Buy new: $37.30 / Used from: $24.41 But if you love your herps and really want to go the whole hog, then this book cannot be bettered. Once again, its use extends far beyond the frontiers of Costa Rica and it makes dangerously addictive armchair reading too! I wish we had more works like this for South America.

![]() | Amphibians and Reptiles of La Selva, Costa Rica, and the Caribbean Slope: A Comprehensive Guide by Craig Guyer
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $5.20 On the other hand, if a huge treatise is not what you want, this compact little guide to the Caribbean slope herpetofauna is well worth the money. Especially useful for those on an extended stay at La Selva.

![]() | Serpientes de Costa Rica / Snakes of Costa Rica by Alejandro Solorzano
Buy used from: $341.00 The definitive guide to snakes and the only INBio guide to appear on the list. They are a series of locally produced, portable field guides to various aspects of Costa Rica's biodiversity and well worth purchasing, not least because the authors are experts in their field and profits support INBio - the National Biodiversity Institute. I have half a dozen of them, but I can't see them on Amazon.

![]() | The Butterflies of Costa Rica and Their Natural History, Vol. I: Papilionidae, Pieridae, Nymphalidae by Philip J. Devries
Buy used from: $159.95 The first of two volumes that cover just a part of Costa Rica's butterfly fauna. Both are masterworks of taxonomy, identification and natural history and nothing like them is available for any other Latin American country. If you buy just one, this is the one to go for as it includes the Nymphalids and Pierids that will be familiar to temperate dwellers as well as the conspicuous Swallowtails.
|
![]() | The Butterflies of Costa Rica and Their Natural History, Vol. II: Riodinidae by Philip J. DeVries
Buy used from: $37.50 Volume 2 of the above and perhaps only for specialists. Not cheap but the cost is worth it if you visit Costa Rica regularly or will use it elsewhere.
|
![]() | Tropical Plants of Costa Rica: A Guide to Native and Exotic Flora by Willow Zuchowski
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $17.95 I have found this book justifies its weight and it now accompanies me on all my trips. It's highly pictorial and especially useful for identifying the plants you'll see in the garden of the hotel or at the roadside - so gardeners will love it.
|
![]() | A Field Guide to Plants of Costa Rica by Margaret Gargiullo
Buy new: $26.07 / Used from: $23.57 I don't yet have this field guide, but it looks like a new alternative to the above. It's on my Wish List!
|
![]() | Field Guide to the Orchids of Costa Rica and Panama (Comstock Book) by Robert L. Dressler
Buy new: $32.64 / Used from: $19.99 The standard photographic guide to the country's orchids. Not for those with a casual interest.
|
![]() | Naturalist In Costa Rica by Alexander F. Skutch
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $17.95 Alexander Skutch's name is synonymous with the natural history of Costa Rica. This book tells his story. Besides co-authoring the first field guide to the birds, he made important contributions to ornithology, many of them published as readable books on various families of Neotropical birds.
|
![]() | A Neotropical Companion by John Kricher
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $12.40 Not specifically Costa Rica, but this mini-encyclopedia will help you prepare for a first trip to the Neotropics and will be a much-thumbed reference to all aspects of natural history during and after your stay.
