A Realtors View of this Book
I was a realtor before moving to Costa Rica and am still one. Therefore I feel qualified to evaluate this book.
I really looked forward to reading this guide. Its strong point is the objective information it contains in some sections like how to find property, how to use the National Hall of Records or Registry and the description of different parts of the county.
However, the negatives far outweigh any good points this guide contains. As the author mentions anyone may sell real estate in Costa Rica since a license is not necessary. But he implies that he is the only one readers can trust and that you may lose your shirt if you deal with a regular realtor. I don not buy this. The authors constant promotion of his services on almost every single page of the book is like a broken record. [...]
To really benefit from this guidebook one has to separate the agenda of the author from the useful material it does contain. It is too bad a more objective guide does not exist.
Another Viewof a Realtor
Although many parts of this guide are an excellent source of basic real estate information about Costa Rica, I strongly believe the reader has to try and separate the wheat from the chaff. The problem is the the book is redolent with the authors promotion for his services. More objectivity is definitely need to make book a truly great source of information.
To be fair I rencently spoke with some members of the local Costa Rican Real estate Board. All of them concurred with my statements above. It is really too bad the author did not devote a little more space and his skill as a researcher to make this guide a really great reference book instead of an ad for his services.
Hopefully he will consider my comments when he writes the next edition. Go for it!
Infomercial
Although there is some good information in this book, I was overwhelmed by the constant (nearly every page) sales pitch for his website. That, plus a clear lack of organization make overshadow anything good this book has to say and make me strongly question the motives and impartiality of the author.
