Best Season To Date!
Last time we saw Sam and Dean Winchester, they had just vanquished the yellow-eyed demon is, but at a terrible price. The battle that brought him down released hundreds of demons from Hell into an unsuspecting world. It cost Sam his life. But a grief-stricken Dean made a deal with the Crossroad Demo -- his soul for Sam's resurrection. Now Dean has just one year to live; one year to fight the unholy, the twisted, the ghoulish; one year to say farewell to Sam; and one year for Sam to search desperately for some way to save his brother's soul from eternal damnation.
The five-disc collector's set features all 16 one-hour episodes, all the classic rock and roll you come to expect from the show, and over an hour of special features never-before-seen bonus material, including a brand-new special effects featurette, gag reel, and commentaries -- plus the chance to download digital copies of the entire season for free from iTunes.
With the 2007 writers' strike that occurred in Hollywood, one would think that this season of Supernatural would be very week and just serve as a minor story arc until Season four came around. However, this is not the case! Supernatural Season three in my opinion is the shows strongest season show, highlighting a great new cast of characters, including Bela (Lauren Chan), and Ruby (Katie Cassidy).
Throughout the year, if you have been following the online community, you will have probably read the general distaste for Lauren Chan and her character, Bela. However, I differ from the majority and find her to be a major asset to the show. She is clever, cunning, and you are always unsure of what side she is truly on (besides her own).
Probably the weakest episode of the bunch is "Ghostfacers!". While this is a wink and nod at all the reality shows on television, I really thought that is was unnecessary since this was such an abbreviated season anyway with the writer's strike.
Supernatural: The Complete Third Season hits shelves just in time and is a great way for fans to catch up with the Winchester brothers before the paranormal journey returns with the season four premiere later on this fall on the CW (of course, my TiVo is already set up to record!).
Not worth the price
I think Supernatural is a much better show than most people (other than fans) give it credit for. But I won't be buying the third season until the inevitable $19.99 sale in a few months. I am pissed that the season was substantially shorter than the first two but we're still being asked to pay the same amount. That just seems wrong. I can't give Supernatural one star no matter how mad I am that they didn't make the price comparable to the amount of episodes contained. So I'm giving it two. Please note that the rating is based on the price alone and not on the quality of the show, which really is good.
Another great season for Supernatural!
Beware may contain spoilers: In the third season of Supernatural, the Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean, find themselves racing against the clock to save Dean from Hell. Dean's is running out and Sam is desperate to break his contract. In the beginning of the season, Dean is hell-bent on living life to the full, pretending that his deadline doesn't phase him. Sam knows him best and struggles to get Dean to admit that he is scared and needs help. Once Dean comes to terms with what is going to happen they both are full out hunting down the demon that holds his contract.
One of my favorite episodes is "The Kids Are Alright." Dean finds a news article about some mysterious "accidents" happening in a town where he had a fling with a yoga instructor named Lisa nine years ago. He is eager to investigate only to discover his old flame has a nine year old son named Ben. The similarities between Ben and Dean are uncanny leading Dean to believe that he is the father. It is a really hilarious and touching episode. Nicholas Elia plays Ben and he does such a great job, you almost think you're watching Dean as a kid.
Another favorite is "Mystery Spot." In this episode, Sam relives the day over and over as he watches Dean die again and again. It's very similar to Groundhog Day. I laughed so hard, I cried. The different ways they found to kill Dean off where hysterical. You could really tell the guys were having fun with this one. It turns out that an old nemesis was to blame when Sam finally figures it out (after reliving the day a hundred times or more).
My review could not be complete without mentioning "Ghostfacers!" I think these guys are great. They once again stumble upon a real life haunting only to run into Sam and Dean on a job. This episodes really goes into great detail about how these guys are driven to uncover the supernatural and get famous. If only they were a little more competent. I love the Ghostfacers and their theme song. I hope we see more of them.
There are so many more great episodes "Bad Day at Black Rock", "A Very Supernatural Christmas," "Bedtime Stories," and "Fresh Blood" to name a few. The seasons seem to be getting better and better. In the last episode "No Rest for the Wicked," the boys meet up with Lilith (the demon holding Dean's contract) and Dean does get pulled into Hell. I can't wait to see how he gets out of this one.
I should mention that we meet some new characters: Bella, a thief who sells supernatural items to the highest bidder, played by Lauren Cohan. She really gets under the guys skin and makes their lives pretty difficult at times. We also encounter, Ruby, a demon who is on a mission to help Sam defeat Lilith. Ruby is played by Katie Cassidy. Ruby is quite an enigma. She tells Sam that she can help him save Dean, but can she really be trusted??
Supernatural is far different than anything on TV today. The acting is superb. I'll say it again... Emmy anyone!!! If you haven't given it a watch, you are missing out BIG TIME!!!
