Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile
In 1955 a group of missionaries entered a jungle in Ecuador to bring Christianity to a hostile and primitive tribe. Attempting to quell their distrust, they showered the natives with gifts and built an airstrip before being massacred by them. Written by the wife of one of these men, the story will be gripping for believers in such initiatives. Others may be overcome by the melodrama and the Jesus-as-Lord tone that explains the nobility but not the naïveté of the mission's intentions. The talented Marguerite Gavin narrates with erudite smugness. She also forces the pathos during some of the more poignant moments but probably not enough to bother listeners who are uplifted by the story. From the Back Cover
Five men entered the jungle in search of a savage tribe . . . and never returned.

In January 1956, a tragic story flooded headlines around the world. Five men, spurred by a passion to share the good news of Jesus Christ, ventured deep into the jungles of Ecuador. Their goal: to make contact with an isolated tribe whose previous response to the outside world had been to attack all strangers.

At an agreed-upon time, their five young wives sat by their radios, waiting for a message that never came. . . .

Through Gates of Splendor, the story of Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, and Jim Elliot, was first recorded in 1956 by Jim’s widow, Elisabeth. Decades later, its story of unconditional love and complete obedience to God still inspires new readers. This edition contains subsequent developments in the lives of the families and the Waodani tribe.

Through Gates of Splendor, Elisabeth Elliot’s first book, has become the best-selling and most powerful missionary story of the twentieth century. Elliot has gone on to become a popular speaker and the author of several books and a host of magazine articles.

Read about the continuing story of the Waodani and the missionaries’ families: This edition includes two preview chapters from End of the Spear, the new book by Steve Saint (Nate Saint’s son), about his return to the jungle and the people who took his father’s life. This story is now a major motion picture.

Customer Reviews

Excellent book. Although the print is quite small.5
I loved this book, it is definitely one to keep in my collection. Although I noticed that the type is very small and therefore a bit difficult to read ( and I have good eyesight ). Also I think something should be mentioned co: the pictures in the book, I knew it was tribal but I was not aware that there were photos. I still would have bought the book but I would definitely give it a PG rating.

One of the best books I have ever read5
If you are a Christian - this is a must read. If you are not a Christian - this is a must read.

Great book. Poor presentation in this current printing. Words and pictures are small. Paper and physical book itself is low quality.
