Spell a word backwards, hum a tune, answer a multiple-choice question, draw with your eyes closed, and more when you play Cranium. Unlike games that focus on only a few skills, Cranium offers 14 talent-tapping activities designed to bring out the best in you and your friends.
Cranium offers 14 talent-tapping activities designed to bring out the best in you and your friends. |
Cards from four decks, color-coded to match each of the crazy characters--Star Performer, Creative Cat, Data Head, and Word Worm--describe activities that teams must complete in order to advance around the board. If you choose a Sculptorades card from the Creative Cat deck, for example, you might be asked to sculpt a hamburger from lemon-scented Cranium Clay while your teammates try to guess what you're creating.

Teacher Review
This multifaceted, activity-based game utilizes many different skills. During the highly social gameplay, each player can choose an activity that challenges them in one of four different skill sets: creative, performance, linguistic, and practical. Depending on which type of activity the player chooses, they will be challenged to such tasks as sculpting a hamburger, unscrambling a word, whistling a popular song, or answering a multiple choice question. Players will typically choose the skill they have the most aptitude for, but a more challenging way to play might be to have the activity chosen at random. --M. Love it, love it, love it!
I was a little nervous to get this game after reading reviews saying it was "too easy." Granted, there are some very easy questions, but these are mixed in with a majority of moderate questions, and a sprinkling of stumpers. My kids, ages 8 and 11, loved this game more than any we've ever played. That is because they could finally actively contribute to the competition! Rather than feeling like the team's liability, they were made to feel like a valuable asset. That alone was worth the rather steep price tag. I was a little worried how the game would fare with a group comprised only of adults, but it was a hit at our Christmas party! Everyone loved it and wanted to know where I had found it. The funniest part was when our church-leader had to sculpt "nipples." The tears were rolling down his wife's face, she was laughing so hard. That particular example of a question is not the norm for this game. By that, I mean this game is a great way to draw the kids and adults together for family fun.
A blast!!
My family got this game last year for a late Christmas gift. We played it over the summer, and before I went back to school I bought one for myself. The different categories of questions make it fun and interesting to play. It takes the best parts of many different games, like Pictionary, Name that Tune, Charades, trivia questions and word games. My only advice when playing is to make sure that shyer people are on teams with more extroverted people, otherwise it can get boring. Playing with my friends once all the "mathematical" people(engineers) were on one team and the more "creative" people were on the other. It took forever to get through and wasn't terribly interesting. When there's a nice mix however, the game goes quickly, and is a lot of fun. There are some difficult questions in there, mostly some trivia questions and the "Humdingers" which have you hum a song. Occasionally there are some people who you may not know either. But it isn't any more difficult than Pictionary or Taboo, a wide age range can play at the same time and enjoy the game, and everyone can have fun. If you like group games like Taboo, Guesstures or Pictionary, you'll love Cranium...and the more the merrier!
Anyone can play
I purchased this game after hearing about it from a friend. We took it home for the holidays and played non-stop for hours with the entire family. Then we brought it over to a friend's house.
There are four basic categories, each of which bring out a certain skill set. There is the green catagory where you have to act like a famous person, play charades, or hum a song.
The blue category challenges your art skills - either drawing like pictionary, or with your eyes shut, or sculpting something out of clay.
The red catagory is very similar to a trivia game and the yellow category is for everyone who aced English class in high school! It involves spelling words both forward and backwards and choosing the correct definition for a word.
This game brings out the hidden talents in all of us. I especially like the clay (it comes included). No other game I've come across lets you sculpt the answer in clay. We fight over who gets to do the sculpting every time!
