This book needs to be added to "One City, One Book" lists across the country. It discusses life lessons learned, consciously and unconsciously, as a result of our experiences with nature. I rate this with "Walden" and "A Sand County Almanac." It is that important of a book.

The 'Atlas Shrugged' of urban planning. Comprehensive. A long read. A must read. Not a favorite author of Jane Jacobs.

An awesome book that I had to read for a class in graduate school. The majority of classmates who read this book agree with me that this is a must read.

I read this after reading 'How Cities Work' which trashed the authors of this book. Interesting book from the Traditional Neighborhood design perspective - slightly different from Calthorpe and the Transit Oriented Design perspective.

Just when you think that "American Metropolis" is the best planning book written ...

Provocative thinking. I grew in Wisconsin and 'never saw' this side of the State I used to call home. An eye-opening beginning that tells of the species that have disappeared. Order this and 'Walden' at the same time. This book should be in every Freshman Studies class in every college.

Another book that spurred people towards planning. I find it amazing that he used to be the planning director for the City of Greensboro (NC)

An eye opening book on the Politics of Water in the Desert. I read this book while in graduate school.

The main message is that there will be something that comes along as a new product, behavior, or principle that at first seems crazy, unattainable, or unnecessary, then it will seem plausible/possible, then it seems like it may work, and finally the need for the product, action, or idea becomes nearly self-evident. A Paradigm Shift. We are experiencing a paradigm shift regarding oil consumption.

Jane Jacobs turned 'common sense' into uncommon sense. I read her masterful "Death and Life of Great American Cities" prior to graduate school and while in graduate school. Another book to add to my 'summer reading list.'
