Terrific book about growing up in Thatcher's England. Gen Xers will love the music references.

Finally picked this up after reading a piece on Tolstoy in the superb Canadian magazine, the Walrus. The 1,400 pages are worth it.

Prescient book from the author of Babbit about the rise of fascism in America. The storm troopers are even called "Minutemen" like the morons who bully illegal immigrants in California and the rest of the Southwest. The ending of this book was echoed recently by the slew of Republican scandals that destroyed their hold on congress.

A little gross, but he grows on you, hopefully not like that pimple he describes on his nose.

Makes you hate humanity in general

A book of terrific essays, excluding Tom "I snub the X-Men but spent a thousand words justifying my love of video games" Bissell's Distractions. Meghan Daum and Robert Lanham slam the hipster crowd with relish.
