Games That Changed My Life
By an Amazon.com customer
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade GameTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game
Buy used from: $4.99
My first gaming experience that was epic in every sense of the word. I played this game over and over because I loved the Ninja Turtles (Donatello was my favorite). Even today, the game is still a satisfying beat'em up that includes a lot of TMNT characters and great music.
Super Mario Bros. 3Super Mario Bros. 3
Buy used from: $13.90
Anybody who owned an NES had this game. One of the greatest games ever made, Super Mario Bros. 3 perfected gaming and brought it to a wider audience. Everything about this game is flawless and chances are you've already played it and know exactly what I'm talking about.
Duke Nukem 3DDuke Nukem 3D
Buy new: $43.99 / Used from: $2.99
Oh Duke Nukem. Thank you for warping my impressionable young mind into loving first person shooters. I would never be the same without you. Duke Nukem 3D introduced me to blood & gore, inventive weapons, new gameplay mechanics (exploration, hidden areas, etc), and of course, nudity all within the same fantastic game. After this, the shotgun became my weapon of choice in games.
Turtles IV Turtles In Time SNESTurtles IV Turtles In Time SNES
Buy used from: $15.89
Though I got my SNES very late in the game (after my N64, believe or not), this was still one of my absolute favorites, taking everything from TMNT II: The Arcade Game and improving upon it. More characters, beautiful graphics, great music and an all-around fantastic experience!
Contra III: The Alien WarsContra III: The Alien Wars
Buy used from: $13.99
I loved Contra and Super C, but Contra III was (and still is) my favorite. I remember playing this one for hours with my friends and each of us satisfyingly shooting everything that moves and blowing stuff up. I can still recall the joy of discovering the spinning gun move (hold L + R and fire) or the triumphant cheer when one of us got the Spread Gun.
Super Star Wars Trilogy 3 Game Bundle (Super Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Return of the Jedi) for Super NintendoSuper Star Wars Trilogy 3 Game Bundle (Super Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Return of the Jedi) for Super Nintendo
Buy used from: $26.95
My video game anger may have began with the Super Star Wars series. Beautifully created by LucasArts and staying faithful to my beloved Star Wars memories as a kid made these games all the more amazing. They looked great and were a blast to play, which I always did at my friend Alan's house. But man were they ever tough!
Mario Kart 64Mario Kart 64
Buy used from: $24.50
Hell yes. The N64 was my first game console (the NES was my sisters) and with it came Mario Kart 64. This was my first intro to Mario Kart and probably my favorite of the series. It is fast-paced, fun, and addictive. I remember playing the Battle mode with my friends and we would always gang up on the worst player. Mean? Yes, but oh so fun.
Turok: Dinosaur HunterTurok: Dinosaur Hunter
Buy used from: $0.55
For me, Turok is a spiritual successor of sorts to Duke Nukem 3D. It had wild weapons (I loved the alien weapon), blood & gore, and expansive levels. And it had dinosaurs! What 11-year-old doesn't go nuts for dinosaurs? I got it for my birthday along with Mario Kart and the rest is history. Plus, its sequel is even better!
Conker's Bad Fur DayConker's Bad Fur Day
Buy new: $129.99 / Used from: $40.95
Ask anyone and they'll tell you Conker is one of the best (if not THE best) game for the N64. This game is perfect in my opinion. It is one of the most immersive, fun, raunchy, and satisfying gaming experiences you'll ever have, bar none. I still play the multiplayer with friends and refer to the game often, which is a testament to its greatness.
Golden Eye 007Golden Eye 007
Buy used from: $8.49
If you haven't played GoldenEye, stop reading and go buy it right now. It is still one of the best movie to game adaptations ever and featured some of the best multiplayer ever (remember the Temple level with the stone slabs that acted as doors?). The quality of this game is astounding, but I would expect nothing less from Rare.
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMXMat Hoffman's Pro BMX
Buy new: $59.00 / Used from: $0.01
The first "extreme sports" game I played, and still one of the best. The amount of content in terms of characters, levels, challenges, and customization is unparalleled, especially for a PS1 game. Sure Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was more popular, but Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX still holds a special spot in my favorite games.
Grand Theft Auto Vice CityGrand Theft Auto Vice City
Buy new: $22.74 / Used from: $1.50
This game is the reason I made this list. GTA: Vice City wasn't just a game, it was AN EVENT. I love GTA 3, but the hype surrounding this game was huge and I had near-insurmountable expectations that were exceeded magnificently. Everything about this game is perfect and I wouldn't change a thing. I actually failed a Chemistry exam because I was too busy enjoying this game!
Red Faction IIRed Faction II
Buy new: $143.36 / Used from: $2.70
One of my favorite FPS's of all-time, Red Faction II is very well-done. The gameplay, the story, the weapons, the characters, and especially the multiplayer, which is one of the best on the PS2. Nowadays, the "You are a supersoldier fighting an oppressive government" thing is cliche and overused, but back then it was fresh and Red Faction II executed it brilliantly.
PSI-OPS Mindgate ConspiracyPSI-OPS Mindgate Conspiracy
Buy new: $50.94 / Used from: $4.95
Psi-Ops brought some truly innovative ideas to the table and executed them quite well. The story is the standard betrayal one, but the new gameplay elements (at the time) really helped the game shine. The visuals are great and amount of ways to dispatch enemies was viciously satisfying. Nothing beats completely draining a soldier's mind energy and having his head explode as a result!
Guitar Hero 2Guitar Hero 2
Buy new: $74.84 / Used from: $3.74
I got Guitar Hero shortly after it was released and was one of the people that liked it before it exploded into the bloated franchise it is today. The first two games are pure genius, Rocks the 80's was a letdown & the third one was when it started to go downhill. You can have master tracks and famous avatars galore, but it still doesn't make it as fun as Guitar Hero II.
Silent Hill 2Silent Hill 2
Buy new: $114.88 / Used from: $10.42
While I played the 4th game first, Silent Hill 2 made a huge impact on me, reminding me that not all games have to be fast-paced action-fests. It showed me that a creepy atmosphere and a lead pipe can go a long way. I was legitimately scared during this game and it still has some of the best monsters ever put into a video game. Silent Hill 2 is horror-survival perfection.
Sly Cooper and the Thievius RaccoonusSly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.83
Wait, a kid's game? Yep, and a damn good one. Sly Cooper was a radical change of pace for me, focusing on stealth instead of action. The level design was absolutely stunning, the characters were creative, the controls and music were top-notch, and the cel-shaded graphics added to the fun cartoon nature of the game. The game was overly easy, but it was still fun and surprisingly deep!
Tony Hawk's Underground 2Tony Hawk's Underground 2
Buy new: $49.94 / Used from: $3.10
While many people hate the Tony Hawk's Underground games, I find them to be quite fun, albeit uncharacteristic. The game itself is not the reason for its inclusion on my list, but rather the game's immense and varied soundtrack. Underground 2 really helped me expand my musical horizons to include a lot more lesser known rock and punk and I thank it for that!
The WarriorsThe Warriors
Buy new: $104.19 / Used from: $15.99
Along with GoldenEye 007, The Warriors is the best movie to game adaptation ever. I love the 1979 film and the game not only captures the feel of film, but also expands the film's universe to include many more gangs and interesting gameplay elements, all while respecting the dark tone of the movie and delivering an immersive gaming experience.
PsychoNautsPsychoNauts
Buy new: $95.26 / Used from: $19.85
A truly original game from mastermind Tim Schafer. The characters are unique and legitimately funny, the levels are creatively designed and visually stunning, the controls are great, and the depth of the game is astounding! Psychonauts really stands out in a sea of repetitive crap and is solid gold fun!
Rock Band 2Rock Band 2
Buy new: $19.92 / Used from: $9.98
Just like Guitar Hero, Rock Band created a ridiculously fun rhythm game that expanded from the guitar to the entire band. Rock Band 2 is near perfect and no other sequels need to be made due to the plethora of downloadable content being offered (something Guitar Hero has failed to realize yet). It's a great party game, but also fun to just jam alone and the amount of customization is incredible.
The Orange BoxThe Orange Box
Buy new: $19.82 / Used from: $13.50
One of the best deals ever, The Orange Box gives you the phenomenal Half-Life 2 and Portal (plus other stuff). Half-Life 2 is outstanding. It looks beautiful and the inclusion of the Gravity Gun makes for one of the most unique game elements in years. Portal is amazing as well, with its clever puzzles and dark humor.
BioShockBioShock
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $13.49
BioShock is on everyone's top lists, but it really was an incredibly epic game for me. The ideas presented, along with gorgeous presentation, character designs, weapons and powerups, were breathtaking. I actually tried to read Atlas Shrugged (the basis for the game's concepts) after playing it - it's THAT good. The game is quite scary too; I still get chills when I play the Medical Pavilion level.
Left 4 DeadLeft 4 Dead
Buy used from: $20.99
I freakin' love zombies. We can all thank George Romero for creating the zombie apocalypse concept which is brilliantly realized in Left 4 Dead. It captures everything just right, combining run & gun action and survival horror into a superb multiplayer experience. The option to play as the game's "Special Infected" is just as fun too! For me, this is the reason to own an Xbox 360.
Ghostbusters: The Video GameGhostbusters: The Video Game
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $21.30
I love the two films and playing a game that is essentially Ghostbusters 3 had me geeking out hardcore. I loved this game, despite its somewhat wonky controls and difficulty spikes. The Ghostbusters universe is expanded wonderfully with creative levels and ghosts and the gameplay is fun and addictive. The inclusion of the original cast is great and really completes the gaming experience for me.
Batman: Arkham AsylumBatman: Arkham Asylum
Buy new: $51.45 / Used from: $39.00
Like Vice City, this game was an event for me. I love Batman and Arkham Asylum is absolutely astounding. It gives us stunning graphics and sound, perfect controls and gameplay, & true fan service by including nods to every aspect of the expansive Batman universe from the comics to the Animated Series. This game is perfect and will be rightfully remembered as one of the greatest games of all-time.
