Buy new: $14.82 / Used from: $11.51
This book has wonderful photographs, and information on, an ordinary woman’s life: betrothal, marriage, mothering, divorce, etc. It also includes sections on the clothing and jewelry women wore, occupations such as professional mourning, prostitution and sorcery, and their more public roles in society: worship, leadership, dance, etc. It covers the entire Bible, not just Jesus’ time.
Integrating Women into Second Temple HistoryIntegrating Women into Second Temple History by Tal Ilan
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $18.70
"This book is organized by source, instead of by topic. It breaks down into how various groups perceived women (the Pharisees, Joseph, Nicolaus, Ben Sira, etc.), the perception of specific known women (Esther, Judith, Susannah, Queen Shelamzion, other royal women, Beruriah, Julia Crispina, etc.) and some miscellany (skeletal remains, premarital cohabitation). It doesn’t discuss daily life much.
Transformative Encounters: Jesus and Women Reviewed (Biblical Interpretation Series)Transformative Encounters: Jesus and Women Reviewed (Biblical Interpretation Series)
Buy new: $258.00 / Used from: $79.99
"This book does not set out to clarify a woman’s daily life. It is a compilation of scholarly essays divided into Literary Approaches (e.g., women visited the cross due to the prophecies, not grief), Historical Reconstructions (e.g., exorcisms), and Actualizations (e.g., modern Japanese women, earlier forced into sex for the military, parallel the ostracism of the bent-over woman in Luke).
Gospel Women: Studies of the Named Women in the GospelsGospel Women: Studies of the Named Women in the Gospels by Richard Bauckham
Buy new: $18.25 / Used from: $13.99
This book contains sections on Jesus’ foremothers, mentioned in the geneologies, as well as the wealthy women that helped finance the traveling of Jesus and the disciples. There are 90 pages on Joanna, which includes little information on an aristocrats daily life, and more on a woman’s right to inherit, her husbands role as the minister of finance, and her possible evangelism in Rome. Jewish Women in Greco-Roman Palestine: An Inquiry into Image and StatusJewish Women in Greco-Roman Palestine: An Inquiry into Image and Status by Tal Ilan
Buy used from: $19.99
This book first covers the stages of a woman’s life - betrothal, marriage, infertility, childbirth, reactions to the birth of a daughter and widowhood. It then focuses on their cultural place - how much they could talk to men, proper behavior in public, legal status, occupations open to them, etc. Last it considers prostitutes, slaves, sorceresses and converts. It does not cover their daily life.
The Jewish Family in AntiquityThe Jewish Family in Antiquity by Shaye J. D. Cohen
Buy new: $17.95 / Used from: $23.96
I ordered this book and returned it, because it didn't seem to say anything I didn't already know. But, I've been doing Gospel research for over a year, so I'm an exception. It might be a great first book on the subject, although brief – it is only 176 pages, which is probably why it didn’t say anything I didn’t already know!
Jewish Marriage in AntiquityJewish Marriage in Antiquity by Michael L. Satlow

I haven't gotten it yet! (5/24/08)
Jewish Slavery in AntiquityJewish Slavery in Antiquity by Catherine Hezser
Buy new: $107.43 / Used from: $67.97
This book has a chapter on the frequent biblical association of "women, slaves and minors." Did husbands and society truly perceive women as slaves? No, this study finds. Their parallel exclusion from public functions and property rights, and their ‘alleged moral deficiency,’ lumped them together, but treatment in daily life set them apart. There is also a chapter on prostitution and concubines."

Daily Life at the Time of JesusDaily Life at the Time of Jesus by Miriam Feinberg Vamosh
Buy new: $14.52 / Used from: $11.50
Pictures and drawings of women’s clothing, looms, grinding grain, houses, a village, celebrations, and the jewelry, makeup etc. of wealthy women make a woman’s life come alive – as well as the men’s (fishing, the blacksmith, etc.) The information is useful also, but the pictures are the highlight. This book is appealing enough that they sell it in many Israeli tourist shops.

A 32-page booklet with fabulous pictures and useful information, geared to 8-12 year olds but wonderful for adults that know little of biblical culture. The Jesus Film (25th Anniversary) Deluxe Commemorative EditionThe Jesus Film (25th Anniversary) Deluxe Commemorative Edition

This film is supposed to be the most accurate and researched film on the Gospels – apparently it was even submitted to biblical scholars to ensure accuracy. It’s great for trying to figure out what women looked like – for example, how did they wear those headcloths? Were they all one style? Did all women wear them, or just married ones? How high did they belt those tunics? What about jewelry?
A Biblical Feast, Foods from the Holy LandA Biblical Feast, Foods from the Holy Land by Kitty Morse
Buy used from: $23.50
These are modern recipes that Mary herself may cooked- if she had the money, in some cases. Each entry is preceded with a biblical verse, and a short culinary/biblical background. Chapters (appetizers, entrees, etc.) include recipes on traditional dishes women cooked as well, such as Passover’s bitter herb salad. The back has modern information, such as where you can buy specialty ingredients.
Food at the time of the BibleFood at the time of the Bible by Miriam Feinberg Vamosh

This covers both meals women cooked, and food’s role in their culture. Culinary history, etiquette and customs, what Scripture forbade and why, the agricultural year, how things were processed (e.g., olive presses), food used at the Temple, how food was kept fresh, the Last Supper, and recipes. A lot of quality, in-depth information with numerous pictures of trees, food, where it was stored, etc.
The Economy of Roman PalestineThe Economy of Roman Palestine by Ze'Ev Safra Nfa
Buy new: $155.00 / Used from: $137.74
Incredibly boring, detailed, expensive and useful. Irreplaceable, literally – there’s nothing else like it. Chicken coops, courtyard gardens, olive presses complete with diagrams, cleaning wool, etc. How poor people lived, crafts, what women could do and how they sold it, etc. 500 very dry pages.
