From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-One Monday, Sammy is inexplicably unhappy. As Ms. B and her students try to figure out what is bothering him, many facts about guinea pigs and their care are conveyed. The teacher goes through all of the possible reasons for his distress-what kinds of symptoms would he have if he were sick? What would he do if he were frightened? What do his different noises mean? Finally, they discover that he just wants a little attention. The story is slight, but the pastel-and-colored-pencil illustrations are very successful in depicting the characters, particularly the endearing little animal with a variety of facial expressions. Sammy is presented in lifelike poses, and the renderings of the children and their somewhat-frazzled teacher also have an air of authenticity. Through simple text and engaging artwork, Berenzy shows the proper set-up of a guinea-pig cage, what foods are best for these creatures, and how responsive they are to humans. This book will find an audience in the many classrooms that have pets.-Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA

From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 2. Guinea pigs are popular classroom pets, so many kids will identify with the experience of the students in Ms. B.'s. class. When the children come in on Monday after two days away, Sammy begins squealing in a way that nobody can understand. The children check his fur and try to figure out if he's frightened or ill. During this examination, much interesting information about guinea pigs' habits is inserted into the text. Softly shaded watercolors, set against a background the color of summer corn, make Sammy seem especially endearing and eminently pick-upable. The kids in the class also have the air of real students. A final "facts about guinea pigs" page adds information about the sounds the animals make, their habits, and how to care for them. In a particularly satisfying ending, one of the students comes up with an explanation for Sammy's noisy problem: he's just happy to see the kids after their weekend away. Ilene Cooper

Sweet little book...
Sadly, a classroom is not the ideal environment for such loving little pets as guinea pigs. They get lonely easily and two days alone is too long...but...
This is a lovely little book with illustrations so sweet it makes you want to cry. Our family pet is a guinea pig and the illustrations are dead on to his expressions. I'm very grateful that there is another book out there for guinea pig lovers.
I hope the author considers writing another one...this time where the guinea pig has a happy family home.
cute
Sammy is a classroom guinea pig. He is usually very happy. He has all he could ever ask for. He has food and water, clean cage, and good friends who care for him. One day the children notice that Sammy seems sad. He makes a fuss while the teacher is trying to teach. The kids try and figure out what is wrong. They make sure that he is healthy. Then soon discover that Sammy is just lonley and wants some attention.
In the end of the book was a list of facts about guinea pigs. I learned a lot from this list.
Yes. This would be a great read aloud for a classroom that has a pet guinea pig.
Adorable book!
This charming picture book manages to impart the basics of guinea pig care combined with an engaging storyline and absolutely perfect illustrations. Follow along with class and teacher as they try to figure out why their pet is in distress. Their attempts to aid him provide the little pig with the attention he craves. Readers will fall in love with Sammy and his wonderfully expressive face. An excellent book for youngsters considering acquiring a guinea pig.
