The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.14
The only true classic on this list is ironically over thirty years old. Nevertheless, The Exorcist remains as the definitive horror film, in that it is simultaneously painstakingly well-made and scary as hell.
Dawn of the Dead (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut)Dawn of the Dead (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
A classic in the making--no doubt. The original Dawn of the Dead was my favorite zombie film up until this beast of a movie was released. Unlike the original, which was horror/satire, the remake is possibly the most action-packed horror film I have ever seen.
Dog SoldiersDog Soldiers
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.97
Great cult British flick directed by Neil Marshall, who brought us The Descent. Pits werewolves against a squad of soldiers in the wilderness.
Black Sheep (Unrated)Black Sheep (Unrated)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.49
What more can you ask for than a movie featuring killer sheep, shapeshifting, and bestiality? This movie has it all I tell you! Really... I couldn't stop laughing from start to finish.
Silent Hill (Widescreen Edition)Silent Hill (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.23
Everyone knows that videogame-to-film adaptations are almost unanimously doomed to fail--almost that is. I was pleasantly suprised by how eerie and atmospheric Silent Hill proved to be, even though I was never a fan of the games themselves.
Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $14.30
Outrageously grotesque musical. Blood squirts all over the place in this one, plus it stars Johnny Depp.
Grindhouse Presents, Planet Terror - Extended and Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition)Grindhouse Presents, Planet Terror - Extended and Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.92
Planet Terror is definitely the main highlight of Grindhouse, as Death Proof turned out to be a total letdown. Planet Terror is an awesome throwback to the heyday of splatter B-movies of the 70's and 80's.
The Descent (Unrated Widescreen Edition)The Descent (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.28
What starts off as a typical Lifetime drama quickly evolves into a bloody splatterfest. More than anything else, The Descent's strongest aspect is the incredible suspense that permeates the entire film, and is the result of the claustrophobia-inducing environments of endless caves and caverns that seem to stretch on for eternity.
28 Weeks Later (Widescreen Edition)28 Weeks Later (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $2.75
The sequel to 2002's post-apocalyptic zombie fest is much more harrowing and disturbing than the original, especially the opening sequence. Whereas the original featured a lot of slow points and was too arthouse for my tastes, the sequel kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Shaun of the DeadShaun of the Dead
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.88
Hilarious take on the current reemergence of zombie films.
The AbandonedThe Abandoned
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.89
After Dark Films is really doing the horror fan community a great service with their annual "8 Films to Die For" festival and subsequent DVD releases. Everyone has their own favorite After Dark film, and mine happens to be The Abandoned, mostly due to the incredibly creepy cinematography and atmosphere.
Feast (Unrated Edition)Feast (Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.48
Another hilarious horror comedy that applies a Guy Ritchie-esque formula to a horror setting. Also stars Henry Rollins of Black Flag in a classic role as a wannabe motivational speaker.
SawSaw
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
Saw is to the 2000's as Nightmare on Elm Street was to the 1980's. The first one was great, but the rest sucked.
Freddy vs. Jason (New Line Platinum Series)Freddy vs. Jason (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.43
Cheesy, predictable, and quite contrived. You really have to be a die-hard fan of Freddy and/or Jason to like this one, but it's an entertaining showdown nonetheless.
Jeepers CreepersJeepers Creepers
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.38
A sleeper hit that draws from the classic monster movies of the 50's and 60's. Jeepers Creepers is a solid B-movie that is definitely worth a watch.
The Devil's Rejects (Unrated Widescreen Edition)The Devil's Rejects (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.95
My favorite slasher film in years, Rob Zombie outdoes House of 1000 corpses by a longshot with this killer sequel. Devils Rejects succeeds by bringing a group of incredibly memorable protagonists to the big screen with the demented firefly family. The epic ending really elevates this to being one of the best films on this list.
Underworld (Widescreen Special Edition)Underworld (Widescreen Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.89
Yes, Underworld is pretty cheesy, but it's still an incredibly entertaining movie. The concept of pitting werewolves against vampires is reason enough to give it a shot.
The Others (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)The Others (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.49
I almost passed up The Others completely due to it starring Nicole Kidman, and ended up really enjoying it when I finally gave it a chance. It's a classic ghost story that features a great surprise twist.
Signs (Vista Series)Signs (Vista Series)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $0.28
Signs is a great example of psychological horror, but unfortunately was brought down by a lackluster climax. Even with a subpar ending, Signs is still a great movie and is my favorite offering from M. Night Shyamalan.
Session 9Session 9
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.09
Session 9 is a little known film that went under the radar of most horror fans during its release. Great low budget psychological horror.
The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $8.44
Greatest Stephen King film adaptation since 1994’s Shawshank Redemption and also features some of the best special effects in any horror movie of recent years.. The Mist really slows down in the final act, but is skyrocketed into the realm of insanity with the horribly twisted ending. Makes the original Night of the Living Dead's conclusion look like a hopeful ride into the sunset.
What Lies BeneathWhat Lies Beneath
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.25
Much like The Others, What Lies Beneath is also a classic ghost story. Features a memorable performance from Harrison Ford.
Cabin FeverCabin Fever
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.10
Teen movie that features some hilarious moments and revolves around a viral outbreak amongst a group of friends on a camping trip.
Blade II (New Line Platinum Series)Blade II (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $0.80
Blade II is the highlight of the Blade trilogy, even though the story was stolen from Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust. The sequel is much more action-packed and entertaining than its predecessor.
Vampire Hunter D - BloodlustVampire Hunter D - Bloodlust
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.25
For those of you that hate Anime as much as I do, this is the one for you to watch! Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust is the best and only good Anime I have ever seen. It's a shame that the story was ripped off by Blade 2, as this version is vastly superior.
BelowBelow
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.11
Below is yet another film that many in the horror film community have yet to see, and is pretty entertaining low budget schlock. The coverbox review pretty much sums it up: "U-571 Meets Poltergeist."
Mulberry Street - After Dark Horror Fest (2007)Mulberry Street - After Dark Horror Fest (2007)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.50
Another good entry into the 8 Films to Die For series. This one is about NYC being taken over by a zombie infestation after an unwilling victim is bitten by a contaminated sewer rat.
Hostel (Unrated Widescreen Edition)Hostel (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $0.01
Mildy amusing torture porn.
