With 3 million copies in print in over 50 languages, Where There Is No Doctor is the most widely used health care manual in use in developing countries today. Using simple language and hundreds of drawings, the book provides information about recognising, treating and preventing common illnesses and injuries. But it is far more than simple first aid information. It covers a wide range of subjects that affect the health of the villager - from diarrhoea to tuberculosis, from helpful and harmful home remedies to the cautious use of certain modern medicines. Special importance is placed on cleanliness, a healthy diet, vaccination, childbirth and family planning. The African edition covers diseases commonly found in Africa.

Customer Reviews
Excellent book, I need a new copy!
I was looking for this book and noted the 2nd review, that rates the book as 1-star simply because it was not available.
I'm an American and I've lived abroad for more than 18 years and I must say that our family copy of the book has lost the cover from much use. The book is practical and very easy to understand. We used Where There is No Doctor: Village Health Care Handbook for Africa most while living living in a then homeland of South Africa. My daughter and family are now in Kenya and I'm going to buy them a copy even though they are in Nairobi.
Again, may I repeat, this book is practical and easy to understand and I do hope my 5* rating will help folks from NOT to be steered away from purchasing this book. There are so many simple treatments, for example, for diarrhea and dehydration. I was able to share that information alone to help local friends. I had not known about this simple treatment prior to looking it up in this book. If you are planning a move to a Third World country, please take this book with you.
Excellent book!
